So apparently mediation is the answer to amicable child custody arrangements....

Saw this article in The Times this morning.

It's not that I disagree - mediation would be a better solution .... in the ideal world. But you only have to spend 5 minutes on MN to realise that the courts land up being involved because a) mediation is impossible with people (mostly men, let's be honest) who are completely unwilling to be flexible and b) who then don't abide by whatever is agreed.

It's like they're completely clueless about the reality of how and why things land up in court int he first place!?

Not sure what point you are trying to make.
Mediation is of course a better way, if it works to get to an agreement. It prevents all cases automatically going through overburdened court system.
And in cases where it doesn’t work - court steps in.
