Is this financial abuse?

I have some credit, a fair amount. My husband found out about it and wants to use all of it to purchase something against my wishes. He is insistant that it is ‘ours’ not mine. He is not financially minded and I worry we will struggle to pay it back.
Does this constitute financial abuse?

What do you mean you have some credit?

SilverTotoro · 19/02/2023 21:28

He has absolutely no right to pressure you into taking on debt. The debt will be under your name only so it is not a joint asset of any kind. I’m assuming it’s a credit card or similar, if you want to remove any temptation you can contact your bank and ask them to reduce the amount of credit you can access.

No, if he wants credit, he can get it in his own name. By his own logic, if the credit is both of yours, then you get just as much say as to what to buy with it, so you can rule out his purchase.

Do not allow him to do this.

YOU WILL BE LIABLE.

Why are you with someone like this.

Do EVERYTHING you can to stop this, cancel the credit card if necessary.

He does sound abusive.

The credit belongs to the person who will be legally obligated to repay it.

That's financial abuse.
If it's not what you want, you will still be liable for it if it doesn't get paid off. It will affect your own credit rating if it goes pear shaped.
If anyone tries to get you to do something you don't want to do and puts pressure on you to do it, that's abuse. It is not taking your thoughts and feelings into account
