'Rough patches' in marriages

My DH and I have been married for 12 years and are going through what I assume can be described as a 'rough patch'. I think we still love each other...we certainly care about each other..but it feels at times that we are living very separate lives and neither of us are as 'in love' as we used to be.

I see so many threads on here suggesting people go their separate ways if they're not happy. Even if DCs are involved (we have one, who is primary age). I really don't want this although I'm not sure about my DH...but is there really such a thing as a 'rough patch' or 'ups and downs'? This implies that things can be tough but improve again (back to good times) but has anyone actually experienced this in reality?

I'm not really talking about people who aren't happy but have decided to stay. More in relation to genuine downs and ups where things actually do get better (hope that makes sense).
