Successful marriage after split?

Has anyone ever split for a while and then got back together and had a happy marriage?

I was unhappy for years, split back in September and now seem to be flirting with each other again and have admitted that we miss each other this weekend.

We have 2 young children and we really don't want to mess them around. I know it could work after a split as I've known others get back together and make a good go of things, but I have my doubts as I was unhappy for about 5 years previously. It wasn't just a blip. And he was very neglectful when it came to addressing the issues.

We have remained perfectly amicable all the way through- still able to treat each other as friends. We have contined messaging most days, joking about the children mainly.

5 years was a long time to be unhappy which makes me question whether I could actually ever really be happy with him?

DH and I were unhappy for 2 years. We took a break and it wasn't amicable. But we got together. And I'm not going to say we are the happiest right now but we are doing what we can for our child. Lots of compromises, a little bit of love. In our marriage, a lot of outside factors have contributed to issues. He blames my parents, and I've been hurt by his parents. Multiple times. We used to live with his parents but now we don't (Thank GOD!!). But they're still pretty impactful on our marriage TBH, and it's not what I want.

5 years is a very long time. Have you been happier since splitting up? What is it you’ve missed? Amicable coparenting is now to be undervalued. It’s also still very early days.

What made you so unhappy and why would any of those issues have gone away?

He started taking me for granted and saw me as little more than a mother and maid after the children came along @AnneLovesGilbert but he seems to be seeing me more as a person since we separated which I thought might happen.
