would anyone else feel this is soon?

when would you define someone as your partner?

we are officially girlfriend and boyfriend but to me it seems too soon to be partners?

I get what you are saying. I am 50s and boyfriend is 50s. I feel ridiculous saying boyfriend. Friends said to use partner, but that seems more serious to me too. I would not overthink.

I agree with this. Me and my partner cant bring ourselves to say boy/girlfriend as it seems silly at our age. We used the phrase quite early.. a few months or so and I was a bit concerned, but we were more than friends and exclusive, so it stuck.

My “man” and I talk about this too! I’m 48, he’s 51. He has called me his girlfriend but I can’t bring myself to say boyfriend, and partners is not what we feel like (long distance a year in). We said that “my man” and “my woman” is what we feel like - but can’t say that in public either

Artygirlghost · 25/11/2022 07:25

What would you like him to describe you as?

''Girlfriend'', ''the woman I am seeing', ''friend with benefit'''?

Does it matter?

''girlfriend/boyfriend'' sounds a bit silly to some once you are an adult.

''Dating'' is such an American concept too which is rather meaningless.

I don't understand why everything has to be so complicated these days...

If you are concerned that he is moving too fast and you are not sure about him then you need to do something about that.

The label in itself is rather a non-issue unless you are having doubts about the guy and don't think you want to anything serious with him.

Personally I think partners live together. If you are just dating then you are boy/girlfriend. “Other Half” also implies a level of seriousness myself. I got fed up of being a “girlfriend” once we had bought a house together and dabbled with “partner” for a while but I actually find the term quite stuffy and I don’t really like it. Fortunately I am getting upgraded to wife soon!

Normal parlance, assuming he's a cowboy.

Presumably he greets you with "Howdy partner"?

milkysmum · 25/11/2022 07:52

I think partner is just what you call a boyfriend/ girlfriend once you are no longer in your teens to be honest.

SmileyClare · 25/11/2022 08:10

I doubt he’s put much thought into the definition of “partner”.
In fact, there is no exact definition so you may just interpret it differently.

What was the context? Introducing you to his work colleagues or elderly aunt?

Would you prefer “lover” “girlfriend” “fuck buddy”? 😉

I think for all the protestations nowadays about not stereotyping or prejudging, everyone is obsessed with labels.

😂
Ive seen people torn off a strip for calling a woman over 18 a “girl”. Perhaps he was trying to avoid saying “girl friend” in case someone felt offended.
Its a minefield.

Somanysocks · 25/11/2022 08:38

Ladyfriend/gentlemanfriend is right and proper.

borntobequiet · 25/11/2022 08:46

''Dating'' is such an American concept too which is rather meaningless.

I have no idea what it means but supposed it involved having sex. It used (I think) to be the American version of “courting”, which generally implied some (mostly limited, before the advent of easily available contraception) physical intimacy.

Choconut · 25/11/2022 08:50

Partner just means the person you're with exclusively surely? Is that not what you want to be? Or are there other signs that this is moving way too fast?

RoachTheHorse · 25/11/2022 08:52

How old are you? Boyfriend/girlfriend may be a bit too "young" for him. Partner just means person I'm seeing exclusively I think.

slowquickstep · 25/11/2022 09:04

Surely a partner is someone you live with not just someone you are dating ?
