Is online dating like shopping in a clearance section?

A post on here a while ago said that online dating is like shopping in a clearance section. Basically that the people on there where like the things the other people hadn't chosen
What does everyone else think about this?

I'm sure the analogy has an element of truth but a clearance sale is usually attended by the less than desirable.

OLD is dumpster diving. For women and men. Very occasionally you get lucky finding someone, who then ghosts you

BadLad · 26/10/2022 03:36

It's like going through dog turds to see if the dogs swallowed any expensive rings before shitting.

I tried OLD very briefly. It turned me right off from seeking a relationship. I’m not one to suffer fools, and that seemed to be the standard. I was in my early 50’s and newly divorced. I quickly realised that the men my age are looking for women 10-15 years younger. I wasn’t interested in becoming a “nurse with a purse” for a man in his seventies or beyond. I’ve spent the past decade single and happy.

For anyone who hasn’t had the pleasure of trying OLD, here is one delightful profile I snapped yesterday Grin

Reader, I swiped left.

That’s perfect, though, you know what he’s like immediately rather than finding out later. Though he sounds like the kind of person who would probably tell you in the first two minutes anyway.

OLD is like flicking through an Argos catalogue and circling what you want for Christmas but being disappointed when it's actually shit when you get it home.

Ooh how is this catch single 😍

Watchkeys · 27/10/2022 19:07

Isn't everybody single someone who hasn't been chosen by someone else? Or who hasn't chosen someone else, which is equally possible of anyone on OLD?

I mean, you can't look at the dating pool and reject everybody who's single because they're single.

Most people aren't compatible with most people. OLD gets it in the neck just like every other new method of dating has over the years. People aren't any different now than they ever were. There were always sleazy people and flakey people. In the days before dating apps, the individuals got the blame. Now, in a place where there are thousands of individuals, the app gets the blame.

So are all the women on it "clearance" too?

Tbf I doubt many women use 'hey wanna see my flesh light' as an opening line.

ColdstreamAnnie · 27/10/2022 20:53

Not all the time. There are people who are widowed who are venturing out into the dating world for the first time in ages. Dating nowadays is very different, so they might come across as unusual until you get to know them.

gogohmm · 27/10/2022 20:55

I met dp online, both recently out of long marriages. Quite a lot of the men were to be honest, a bit like musical chairs, boredom and midlife crisis

No they're all well adjusted, sensible types that have been 'unlucky' with men.

I have had a ridiculously bad day and that made me burst out laughing so thank you! 😀
