Erectile dysfunction, stress, illness & porn use

My partner (48) is unwell at present. He is also under massive pressure at work and is expecting to be fired any day now( due to long term sick leave and inability to do his job as effectively now due to chronic illness) His mood is low, he is ruminating and repeating himself continuously re work.

He uses porn now and again. We both do. I have no issue with it and we watch it together at times. We don't live together.
Through the illness we've enjoyed a refined intimate life. He never has had a problem with erection but doesn't ejaculate usually by hand or oral from
Me . He always does when doing PIV.He can ejaculate through masturbation.

So back to the stress. He is literally reeling. At the weekend , he didn't have any issues the first night, but the second night he just couldn't maintain . He was so upset and I was reassuring and loving. He was embarrassed and kept apologising.
He told me a couple of years ago that this happened before when stressed at work (years ago) but he wasn't in an intimate relationship then.
He did try viagra with his exw for fun and I found those in his wash bag ( expiry 2017) so the dates add up.
Am I missing something here ? Can stress really cause this in an otherwise sexually functioning man?
This is my first experience of this so sorry for long post but I wanted to be sure I wasn't drip feeding. Thanks for taking the time to read and if you can advise me, that would really help.

Yes of course. The bodies biggest sexual organ is the brain. If thats not firing properly, nothing else will work. It sounds like your partner is having a really bad time, maybe find other ways to be intimate that dont lead to PIV sex, like cuddle, have a bath together ect until the pressure is off.

Thank you so much for replying.
He has gone through such a horrific time so it makes sense but as I wrote, I have no experience in this area.

Yes of course. Stress, anxiety and depression can all have this effect. Once the stress is over it usually returns

How about you give him a break! He’s facing redundancy and you’re banging on about sex

nauticalnice · 09/10/2022 14:52

I really am not bothered about sex. I'm asking if there's a link between Ed and stress and how to support him.
There is no need to be unkind.

Lots of things can cause ED, and stress is right up there as a major cause,, this happened to me when I was made redundant, just be there to support him, that’s all you can do really

I don't think he can be "fired" due to his illness, but his employer might agree to come to some arrangement with him about his leaving.
Has he started looking for anything else less stressful?

nauticalnice · 09/10/2022 15:05

Thanks @NoDatingForOldMen that's a very interesting article and helped me to see the cycle that can happen.
Regarding his work, he is applying for other jobs. The environment is toxic presently and there has been an absolute lack of care or consideration given to him considering the gravity of the illness.
The atmosphere is affecting him
Terribly and he is essentially being bullied out the door.

It’s obvious. Plus similar on antidepressants.

nauticalnice · 09/10/2022 15:19

It wasn't obvious to
Me but thanks for replying.

No worries, just put sex to one side for now, once the stress is removed normal functions should resume.

FWIW the meds probably won’t help much as would still need to be “in the mood “ so to speak for them to help

Of course you can lose your job due to being too ill to do it over a long term. Obviously there is due process but you don't have security of employment if you can not do it due to long term health issues
