Ex husband - not a nice person we split up due to DV. He is asking for the marriage certificate - what would this be for? Starting divorce proceedings? He Is not working, I am currently in the house with two children. I am a professional person with quite a good job and pay everything myself. No help from him at all. He refuses to discuss financial agreement or the divorce with me, apart from demanding a figure I cannot afford. Any advice would be helpful.

You do need a marriage certificate for divorce proceedings.

Tell him to buy his own copy.

He can easily order a copy online.
Can you get together records of everything you’ve paid, and evidence he’s not contributed. Whether he’s paid child support or not. He can demand all he wants but you don’t necessarily have to give.

It is most likely for divorce.
You don’t need to worry about his demands, there is a process and judges to decide
whats fair and legal.
Do keep/collect your paperwork on financial and his in involvement/lack of.
If you have time - see if you can line up a solicitor for yourself. But generally - don’t worry. It will be OK, and you will get through this.

Tell him you can’t find the certificate. Or give it to him if you don’t mind seeing him. Who files for divorce doesn’t change terms you will end up with.

Let him buy his own copy.

Why would you give him yours?

Could it be used for applying for anything for children? Such as a passport? X
