Is it normal to lose feelings towards baby if relationship ends?

Ex left me in pregnancy and I feel nothing but fear and apprehension about the baby. I did feel connected and happy but since he has gone I am just totally flooded with this numb feeling and like I wish it could all go away. I’m so worried about when the baby is here, they don’t deserve this.

It sounds like you are going through a lot. You should discuss how you are feeling with your midwife.

You’re in a vulnerable position, being let down at an already daunting, unknown time -
of course you’re going to feel numb, your bodies way of protecting itself probably/ a state of shock.
speak to people OP- don’t be alone in your feelings.
sorry you’re going through this

So you might not be feeling gushing, overwhelming love and joy, but your instinct to protect your baby from anything that makes them feel bad is intact.

You'll be a great Mum. You've had a shock, and it's tainted your feelings towards life in general; nothing is providing you with gushing joy lately, is it? It just stands out more when it's re baby.

Allow yourself your sadness. Your job for baby isn't to make sure they never experience anything negative, it's to demonstrate how to successfully navigate negative things. Navigate this in the way you hope baby will do for themselves when they are older: self-care, self-sympathy, self-soothing. Not stressing about how feeling bad feels for others, not forcing yourself to 'act happy' when you're not, allowing you to be who you are.
