Boyfriend calls his mum wife!

Hi after some advise please. I've just started seeing a Nigerian man who is so lovely and things have been going well.

However, the other night his phone rang and I saw the screen the caller was named 'wifey'. He answered it saying 'hi mummy' but the call didn't connect! I asked his who Wifey was and he says that's what he calls his mum! Seems very odd! He said it's a Nigerian thing for the eldest son to treat his mum as a wife!

I don't know if to believe it or if he has a GF already! Seems suss.

Any thoughts?

Ok I'll bite.

He's already married.

You're welcome.

I smell bullshit but I just asked my Nigerian husband and he says it's true they do that!

SW1amp · 24/07/2022 12:19

He is married with kids

hence he said ‘hi mum’

when DH phones me when I have the kids with me, or he has the kids with him, I would say ‘hi dad’ when I answer

I’m from Africa and always thought it’s the other way around. So it’s a term of respect to call women (unless much younger than you) a variation of mommy/ mama etc I think having ‘wifey’ saved in your phone means he is married and hiding it from you!

girlmom21 · 24/07/2022 12:21

How stupid would you have to be to have your wife saved as 'wifey' if you're with your girlfriend though?

PixellatedPixie · 24/07/2022 12:22

So what I meant is that it would be somewhat normal to call your wife momma but not to call your mother “wifey” if you see what I mean. I grew up in Southern Africa but even friends form the Congo use the same terms. Also, “wifey” is only colloquially used for a girlfriend or wife afaik?

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 24/07/2022 12:23

Oh come on, really? He's married!

WanderlustK · 24/07/2022 12:27

Ohh that's interesting... He said that when the father dies the eldest son is treated as his mums husband!

In a ‘you’re the man of the house now’ sort of way, and an expectation to provide financial and practical help

but you think he has to start calling her wife as well? C’mon now…

This so funny 😁. And the gag is?

SunshineAndFizz · 24/07/2022 14:12

Funkykitty · 24/07/2022 14:54

Definitly married.

AnyFucker · 24/07/2022 14:56

I often wonder how some people get through an average day

Branleuse · 24/07/2022 14:58

Clearly bullshitting at best, and some weird incestuous cultural tradition at worst

CinderellaFant · 24/07/2022 15:00

Definitely married

DillonPanthersTexas · 24/07/2022 15:02
