Urgent help needed, possibly pregnant with Mirena coil

If I have a Mirena type coil (the hormone releasing kind) and I have by some unfortunate miracle happened to get pregnant with it in, does anyone know if a pregnancy test will be accurate? Also is there any chance of the baby being viable with the coil??

I'm sorry I'm not sure, I would call 101 to ask for advice on this

OldFan · 22/07/2022 21:52

I imagine a pregnancy test would be just as accurate as for anyone else.

They will remove the coil if you're pregnant. But it's unlikely you're pregnant, I'dve thought.

BarbaraVineFan · 22/07/2022 21:55

It is unlikely I know, but I have put on weight and also i think I may have felt some movement - but can't be sure it's not my anxiety playing tricks on me. Periods don't help because I have not really had them since I had the coil in.

So do you think the hormones produced by the coil could cause a false positive (Or false negative) or do you think I should get a test?

LucieLemon · 22/07/2022 22:03

HCG is the hormone produced by a pregnancy, the coil releases a different type of hormone (a type of progesterone I think?? So a pregnancy test will work.

However, if it is positive I'm unsure what happens with the coil?

BarbaraVineFan · 22/07/2022 22:07

Right, you're right, if I could have thought clearly I would have realised that, thank you!! So I need to get a test. Fuck. This is not good.

Yes, pregnancy tests are accurate with the coil

if positive you need to speak to either GP or your local Early pregnancy assessment unit (usually attached to obs and gynae dept in hospitals but each unit has different rules about self referral) so they can arrange for a scan to rule out ectopic pregnancy.

in my experience, most of the time when this happens the coil has actually fallen out. Have you checked for the threads?

RioDJ · 22/07/2022 22:12

Yes, and yes.

WomanHere · 22/07/2022 22:20

A test would be accurate. I don’t think it’s uncommon to feel ‘movement’ similar to that in pregnancy. I often have that feeling and have an implant and my FWB has had a vasectomy so I’m definitely not pregnant! It’s an odd thing.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 22/07/2022 22:22

I had a coil fitted a couple of weeks ago (Mirena) and the doctor said pregnancy generally only - and very rarely - happens if it is not where it should be. Per pp, can you feel the threads?

redlip · 22/07/2022 22:26

Weight gain is one of the most common side effects of the coil. My tummy is so bloated and looks like an early bump (def not pregnant) so I done some research and it seems more common than not.

Obvs that doesn't explain the movement but if you're anxious about it, it could be your mind playing tricks

Keroppi · 22/07/2022 22:46

I had the copper coil and got pregnant (unknown to me my coil had fallen out at some point) I tested positive and then rang the drs, they asked me to try and feel for my strongs then booked me a scan at the hospital to see if it was there or not. I think it must have came out with a period clot or something? I had my strings cut quite short so was hard to self check tbh

Get a test and try and feel for your strings!

OldFan · 22/07/2022 23:44

The movement I imagine is probably wind. To have movement you'd have to be about 16 weeks pregnant or more, and I imagine you'd know about it by then.

DorritLittle · 22/07/2022 23:50

I think it's unlikely but a pregnancy test should work!

gogogadgetgo · 22/07/2022 23:54

It is fractionally possible. I got pregnant with mirena. However I have a stubborn uterus which apparently tried to eject the bloody thing

Pregnancy test will show it. That was how I found out as I had no periods either.

Take a deep breath and do the test. Then take it from there.

As pp have said all your symptoms could be just normal coil stuff. It is very very rare to get pregnant with one.

Dery · 23/07/2022 00:17

“The movement I imagine is probably wind. To have movement you'd have to be about 16 weeks pregnant or more, and I imagine you'd know about it by then.”

This re movement. Good luck getting this sorted, OP.

I'd be cautious relying on a pregnancy test. I have a Mirena and last year thought I may have been pregnant due to sore breasts and fatigue. 3 tests came back positive including a pink first response, which seems to be much coveted on MN.

Called family planning clinic and they booked me in asao for a scan as there's a higher ectopic risk with a coil. Scan showed nothing except my coil in the right place and their test was negative. Nurse and doctor said they'd never personally experienced anyone pregnant with a Mirena and only once with the copper coil. They explained my symptoms away as hormones, and said shop bought tests can be unreliable.

I found it surprising they'd rubbished the shop bought tests tbh.

It's highly unlikely you're pregnant. I hope you get the result you want though.

liliainterfrutices · 23/07/2022 00:26

I got pregnant with the Mirena. It wax properly in place throughout.
mind you I’ve often also felt movement when not pregnant. You need a test. I hope things work out well for you.

Coffeeandcrocs · 23/07/2022 09:04

Another person who had a Mirena baby here! It had slipped down without me knowing

Kindofcrunchy · 23/07/2022 09:09

My exSIL got preg with the coil in. It does happen!

I had been thinking about having the coil, but knowing some side effects and you just mentioning that about weight gain, not a good idea for me at all, already have enough problems in that department. Not sure about the non hormone one though? As there is one without any hormone lining in it. Because other than that, I now cannot have anything else contraception wise 🤦‍♀️

coolmaker · 23/07/2022 23:20

@Redruby2020 if you search on here there are quite a lot of posts re mirena coil. I got it due to heavy periods and it's been life changing, the bloating/weight gain has been a small price to pay and I've been told it can reduce after a while (I'm about 5 months in). On the other bad I've read some absolute horror stories on here with side effects others have experienced.

It seems everyone's experience is extremely varied and individual. First 3 months I hated it....

bigkoalacliphug · 25/07/2022 21:50

I stand corrected!!! (Or the nurse and Dr that told me otherwise do!)

OP, did you get a test?

OldFan · 26/07/2022 22:04

@Redruby2020 Yep I had the hormone free one as I had a condition effected by contraceptive hormones. As no hormones are involved, the only side effects you might get are heavier periods (I didn't really have that though.)

The first one I had for eight years and it was great, no problems. My one was supposed to be changed after eight years (I think some others last longer.) Second time round, how it was positioned was painful (well, that worked as a contraceptive I guess 😆) so I had to have it removed.

I recommend trying it, though.
