I don't know about this service, it sounds strange. I think tone of voice, body language, etc etc, matters so much with these things.

Relate do have some interesting self-help books, which might be worth trying?

(Re: how much you can afford - surely £40/session is a lot less than what separating would cost?)

annh · 15/01/2008 23:54

I thought that if you could not pay the full Relate fee you could come to some arrangement with them to pay a reduced amount?

choosyfloosy · 15/01/2008 23:57

I think got to be worth a try tbh.

however, if you can't afford it (I couldn't either), try asking for reduced fees - they certainly used to offer this.

alternatively, i have had free counselling in the past through workplace occupational health - do either of you have access to anything like that?

There are other places you can go to for counselling. I went through counselling after a bereavement few years ago at somewhere called holy-rood house - they didnt charge me much at all. Its worth asking at your gp service for places or contacting the bacp.

The samaritans do email - its not counselling but is someone to bounce stuff off.

There are loads of free counselling services, I work for a womens centre and an alcohol service for free - there may be a waiting list but sounds like you've been carrying this for a while so you may be prepared to wait.

Also some counsellors do a reduced fee negotiated with what you can afford (I do this for students studying counselling).

And also £40 is fairly standard for the south-east but it is getting increasingly competitive and you should be able to find someone for £25.

Hope this helps

I'm doing relate through my gp (free) and not such a long waiting list either, why not try that instead.

I think it is a sad refeletion on society when there are so many people crying out for help but cant get it.

Most solicitors give a free session to give you some idea of where to go.

But it takes weeks to get a counsellor at a good time and costs a fortune too.

is there anyone else you could talk to - maybe a vicar as they are often trained in some sort of counselling.

Good luck and i hope you get it sorted.
