Is my annoyance irrational?

I'm feeling a bit down lately and I don't know if this is contributing to my decreasing tolerance levels but I'm starting to get so wound up at people that simply say stuff wrong. Like my friend earlier said "Koznovo" and it really annoyed me and I know its a silly thing to get mad at but I cant help it.

My mum is the worst for it but she's so bad that half the time I swear she does it on purpose. For instance I told her about that BBC bitesize site that would help my younger sister with her SATs and she told my sister to go and look for "bikesize". Ok so it could've been a simple case of mishearing but my sister actually corrected her, showed her the site, they played around on it for a while but afterwards my mum was still calling it "BikeSize" or "That Biker Site". She calls the mock exams "Mott Exams", GCSE's are "GCEs" but she does it with EVERYTHING and seems to continue to do it even after people have corrected her.

For instance the new shopping centre is called "St Stephens" and my mum insists on calling it "st stephens square" even though its NEVER been called that and people KEEP telling her its wrong.

Am I being irrational or would this annoy anyone else?

get a grip.

LynetteScavo · 15/01/2008 14:32

Oh, so you don't call it Johnny Phonics then!

Iklboo · 15/01/2008 14:34

gcses used to be called GCEs - I still call them that sometimes.

BordomStrikes · 15/01/2008 14:35

ok so maybe I'm being irrational afterall. Its just that after so many years of it it gets annoying, especially when you tell her time and time again that its wrong, its like she does it on purpose.

yes it is irrational.

You need to practice methods of calming down/anger management.

It prob is linked to you feeling down.

wannaBe · 15/01/2008 14:38

like the nickname.

looking for something to do then?

bored are we?

Baffy · 15/01/2008 14:40

PMT?!

Tbh it would really annoy me too so no, I don't think you're being irrational

dividedselfridgesxmaswindow · 15/01/2008 14:41

I actually get slightly irked about such things I must admit, and yes probably is when I'm feeling frazzled and thus impatient rather than all the time.

Is the boredom spelled wrongly intentional, cos that might irrationally bother me on a bad day

BordomStrikes · 15/01/2008 14:42

not feeling bored, its a song. I changed my name incase I was being irrational

lol you need pedant's corner.

tarantula · 15/01/2008 14:57

Have to say things like this really irritate me too esp. Like dp saying Convent Garden for Covent Garden and he's the bloody Londoner so should know better.

Deep breaths help.

I also try to think of funny malapropisms like dd nana talking about constipation on the windows. that helps alot.

sabaidii · 15/01/2008 17:53

This can be a bit annoying sometimes. Try not to let it bother you too much though.

Viggoswife · 15/01/2008 18:06

I know how you feel. My Mum does it often too eg we had a name throughout my pregnancy that we quite liked for our DD and thought that was what we were going to call her. When she arrived she just did not suit the name so we gave her another. My Mum still calls her by the name that we thought we MIGHT give her. I wouldnt mind but DD is 17 months old. It has been a while.

I think they do it for attention. I resolutely ignore any silliness like this from my Mum.

kerryk · 15/01/2008 19:26

what drives me insane is when people say "the isle of white" its bloody wight!!!

i need to get a grip as well, dont i

miobombino · 15/01/2008 19:38

I sort of know what you mean...my mum almost seems to revel in getting the SAME things wrong all the time.
eg. Last year she visited us at a time when we thought ds2 might as one of several options be going to a school which just happens to have a statue of Edward Vii above the main door. Since then it's constantly "When is ds2 starting at King Edward's School then"

She has been told dozens of times:

  1. he's actually now going to another of our choices next year
  1. It's not called King Edward's School anyway

Yes, I know. get a grip.

fizzbuzz · 15/01/2008 20:20

The most intensely annoying thing of all is when people say "jewllry" instead of jewellry and sequences instead of sequins.

Tommy · 15/01/2008 20:23

think it's more to do with our relationship with your Mum than anything else! I have a dear friend who often misprounounces things but it doesn't bother me at all!

the spoonerisms

curse your equally-sized left and right language areas

ally90 · 15/01/2008 20:42

How is your relationship in general with her?

hettie · 15/01/2008 21:11

mm your post made me laugh- I'm sure my ds would agree- his favourite is that I can't actualy say the word Pronunciation - i pronounce it pronounce-iation and as for aDvocado

minouminou · 15/01/2008 21:14

thing is, though, i do some great spoonerisms when i'm very tired, so i can mock all i like
my best was, after being hassled by some large water birds along the canal towpath.........
"I've just been swallowed by the fonz"
priceless.

Viggoswife · 15/01/2008 22:26

Don t have any problems with genuine misunderstandings or mistakes. With my Mum however it is done to get attention, to make her sound like a sweet but slightly befuddled elderly woman when she is anything but.....It drives me INSANE. You can always tell when she is doing it on purpose as well because it is usually hand in hand with a winsome little smile. Agree that this intolerance stems from my relationship with my Mum rather than real irritation over a genuine mistake.
