He said he is reliving his youth

My friend is in his late 40s and has 2 young sons. He has said to us recently he is reliving his youth and buying up projects to work on from when he was a teenager. Is this normal for someone this age to behave like this? He kept saying he wants to be young.

What kind of projects?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/06/2022 20:49

My Dh revisited his motorbike obsession at that age. Now we have a garage full of them🙄

Watchkeys · 14/06/2022 20:50

Why do you think he should be 'normal'? Is there any harm in what he's doing?

movingon2022 · 14/06/2022 20:52

Middle age crises. It was motorcycles for my ex too.

Funny how women are too busy running around to have a midlife crisis.

This was exactly what I was thinking. No mention of the boys and the projects he is completing are quite time consuming considering he works full time.

Yeah fine to do this if he fits it in with his obligations to his family. If he doesn’t then he’s just a selfish man- child

muchofamuchnessme · 14/06/2022 21:57

Why does this bother you. Is he harming anyone, neglecting anyone?

muchofamuchnessme · 14/06/2022 21:57

Are his kids older and independent, maybe now is his time again?

ItsAlwaysThere · 14/06/2022 22:00

How unfair. I'm rediscovering passions now I'm in my 40s, I still have young children but am comfortable in myself, know myself more than before and am really enjoying it.

What's wrong with doing that? As long as there's no negative physical, mental, financial implications.

In that case I could be accused of having a midlife crisis. I have spent nearly 20 years prioritising my children, and housework, and Work Work to pay the mortgage and bills. I run around after everyone. And I belatedly realised that if I didn't make a change I would be doing the same for the rest of my life and then I would die. So I returned to my first love and bought a horse, an ex racehorse which is basically the equivalent of an old git buying a Ferrari. I don't regret it for a second. Best thing I've ever done.
I think YABU. Don't let him slack on the house jobs but otherwise I would encourage him, crack on!

Same here, mid 40s, realised I don't care what people think, I can do what I want, and I can afford it. It really isn't just men. And we're all adults. He should be doing what he wants, if he's not doing anybody any harm. Why shouldn't he?

Oh I’ve had several…

User1406 · 15/06/2022 08:48

As long as he can fit it in around his current commitments then I think it's great.

When you're young, you take for granted the little things and think you have more time. Or your priorities are different.

I know plenty of people in their late 20s, early 30s who have taken up a new sport or a musical instrument that they've always wanted to learn. Or taken up ballet again after giving it up as a child. I think it's great to be young at heart. Being 40 doesn't mean you need to stop enjoying the things that make you happy.

Me too. It's just that I don't have anyone around judging me for them...

I'm currently in two punk bands complete with weekly rehearsals for each and frequent gigs.

Being 40 doesn't mean you need to stop enjoying the things that make you happy.

This!!

I don't see what's wrong in reaching a stage of life where you get to enjoy the things that make you 'you' again. Too many people think adulthood is just about working, being grown ups and their partner/children and forget how to be themselves and have fun!

‘Funny how women are too busy running around to have a midlife crisis.’

I not running around or having a crisis. I do exactly what I want, don’t harm
or neglect anyone important and I designed it this way.

What’s the specific problem OP?

GlamorousHeifer · 18/06/2022 08:21

When a woman posts on here saying how lonely she is you get page after page of advice telling her to take up a hobby.
Why is it different because a man has done it?
He may have been lonely or a bit fed up and has done something about it.
Good for him I think.

KangarooKenny · 18/06/2022 08:37

A hobby is ok if you can afford it, and it doesn’t impact on others. Like the garage full of classic car crap.
