Ex owing money utilities

I know this isn't relationship as such.
Long story short
Daughter splits with ex . All bills in ex name.
The ex hadn't paid bills so red letters start arriving.
Daughter contacts utilities companies and is told she must pay the amount as she lived in property at the time, even though her name wasn't on the account .
It's more than £600.
Is this right?
On bill ever paid was the rent. Property now in my daughters sole name

Surely your daughter used the service that she is being billed for?

I used to work for BG, all she needs to do is call up and say the previous occupant moved out and she would like to set up an account in her name, if she's done that and the supply is now in her name there shouldn't be any red letters coming. If there are, bin them as they're not in her name and call and check the supply is in her name now as the previous occupant has moved. They can't chase her if her name's not on the account and they're not addressed to her. She'd be best calling and providing an address for the previous occupant if she has one, even if it's their parents. It makes zero difference if she lived there or not, legally it's not her bill.

If she starts pandering and offering to pay half it makes no difference, the letters will keep coming until it's fully paid off. But they cannot cut a supply or put in a prepayment meter if her account is live and up to date. Sounds like they've repeatedly broken dpa and if I were her I'd remind them of that if they cause a fuss and ask for a manager. They'll soon back down.

She lived there and used the utilities, has she even offered half? I think your daughter is trying it on.

My daughters ex put her in hospital , she needs surgery to fix some of the damage.
So no @Aprilx she isn't trying it on.
She was mentally, physically and financially abused to the point even her pip money was transferred into the exs bank account and she was given money for cigarettes only.
She had to wear tena lady pants as she wasn't allowed to go to the bathroom at night in cases she was trying to run away.
I was trying to ask a simple question without going into the fucking dark reasons behind it.
So please explain how she's trying it on.

Oh give me strength. Suddenly add a load of abuse to your post to make me sound like the bad gut for suggesting that an adult needs to pay for utilities they have used. Pathetic. I am not even going to waste any more time on you, because that was below the belt.

It's not worth the aggro over £300. Just pay it and move on.
