Would this end your friendship?

Supported friend througg suicide attempt last year. She OD and then called the ambulance herself and told them. Bloods came back completely normal levels so no damage from whatever she took.

Just told her that I'm upset as another friend has OD last night. He was found by his flatmate after not replying to text message he sent about feeling fed up constantly (not a goodbye message or anything indicating his plans)

Friends response 'oh not being funny but if he really wanted to do it he wouldn't have text someone'

This coming from the person who took a minimal amount of tablets then rang an ambulance (and has done so about 3 times since I've known her)

I just feel livid.

I just don't want to speak to her again.

Am I over reacting because I'm emotional right now?

You may be emotional. Understandably so. I would wait before making any decisions. Let this emotional wave pass.

I know someone who took their life. They told someone by text immediately before. Most people do tell someone before.

I feel like this is the final straw, there's so much other stuff gone on that just makes me not like her.

Friends response 'oh not being funny but if he really wanted to do it he wouldn't have text someone'

Blimey. Even taking out the issue of her own attempt last year, this is unbelievably crass.
How she could not manage to work out that the thought that your poor friend didn't genuinely want to die (but sadly, did ...) might be the least comforting thing for a bereaved & shocked friend to hear is beyond me.

She's right - she's "not being funny", & I'm not sure Id be able to resist the urge to tell her so, & that if she has nothing supportive or compassionate to add could she kindly FRO?

I feel like this is the final straw, there's so much other stuff gone on that just makes me not like her.

In that case, maybe it is time to step back.

While there is some truth in the cry for help thing it's still an awful insensitive thing to come out with. Sounds like it's the last straw with you OP.

grapewines · 20/04/2022 11:33

I would be done with her.

My best friend had a sibling take their own life. She spent a lot of time working through her feelings, trying desperately to understand why, raising awareness about asking for help etc.

A year afterwards we met up as live far apart. I asked how her other siblings were doing and she said oh x says she has depression from the grief, went to the doctor, got meds and counselling but fgs its not REAL depression.

I couldn't continue the friendship after that, and I was called unsupportive and I couldn't possibly understand. As someone who has attempted and been dismissed by people close to me, I disagree.

CruCru · 20/04/2022 11:44

Honestly? It may be that you've been so supportive that you've run out of empathy. Everyone has limits and you may have reached yours.

FayCarew · 20/04/2022 16:32

Sorry for your loss.

He did not text someone.
Your friend has even made a tragic death be all about her.
