Rant alert - my sister has opened an account under my address

Rant coming up. My sister who lives in NZ asked me what to get DD for christmas. I asked for a dressing gown as she had grown out of hers and thought it was reasonably light so wouldnt cost too much. Sister in question then claims they dont have ay towelling dressing gowns in NZ [hmmm]. She rung me from NZ at the wekend and said she had ordered a dressing gown from Next for DD but said when she went to pay it looked as though they had opened an account for her with a credit limit. I wasnt exctly sure what she meant but the items arrived yesterday. There is nearly £50 worth of stuff all addressed to her. DD opened them all and I then spoke to sister last night and suddenly clicked, how could she have opened an account with Next with an address in NZ. She started by saying it had 'just happened and she wasnt sure how/why' but then admitted she had used my address. I assume that now the bill will be coming here. I cant send the stuff back as I have opened it. I am bloody at her for opening the account using my address without asking and at Next for allowing this to happen. Do they not check these things? She says she will send me the money [hmmm].

Can't you send the stuff back if it's opened just the same as if you received it and it didn't fit or whatever?

Is it some kind of credit account? or will it be charged to her credit card? If it's your address, couldn't you just close the account yourself????

I bought some stuff for my sister in NZ and she did pay me back, but the bank charged me £12 to change the money from NZ$ to £!!!

TheYoungVisiter · 08/01/2008 22:47

Have you got a reason to think that your sister won't reimburse you? If not then I wouldn't worry...? If you have then tell her that if you don't receive the money within x days you will be sending back the goods.

I am sure Next will accept them back, as Missing says - if you had bought them for yourself you would still have had to open them to see if they fitted? Next are usually fine about returns.

fishie · 08/01/2008 22:50

of course you can send it back. and i think they will not be having towelling dressing gowns in the middle of summer at the other end of the world.

is there maybe another problem here?

AttilaTheMeerkat · 09/01/2008 08:24

Your sister should never have been permitted by Next to open an account with them as she is not a UK resident. I am also wondering what name was used to open the account as Next often use credit reference agencies, they certainly would have looked at your home address for credit checking purposes.

You need to contact Next to get this account closed. I think the items can be returned to Next but they need to be returned within 10 days of receipt if sent back.

It is very hard to order something from the Next website and not open an account IME. In theory you can order and pay with a credit card, but I ordered something from them once and when I got to the the part where I wanted to pay the site wouldn't let me and opened an account instead. It was a pain in the flipping neck.

Is there any reason to think that your sister won't pay it off? I think her intentions were good, a towelling dressing gown would cost a fair bit to post from NZ so it makes sense to have it sent from the UK.

MrsJohnCusack · 09/01/2008 08:43

can I just point out that there are PLENTY of towelling dressing gowns in NZ, even in the summer

but you knew that already

LadyMuck · 09/01/2008 08:43

NEXT are incredibly easy to return items to - and I have to say that I've never had a return stopped just because I was outside my 10 days. I've just returned a top that I bought nearly 3 months ago without a quibble.

Twiggypiggy · 09/01/2008 08:46

Course you can send them back. There will be a telephone number for the courier on the delivery note or on the front of the packaging - just ring him up and they will collect. Fill in the returns notice and say the garments are not suitable or don't fit - there are quite a few options.

You will probably end up paying for the delivery though - I think it is £3.75. They will bill you for this in about a month.

stripeymama · 09/01/2008 09:04

It could have been accidental - as in she gave them your address for delivery, without realising that it would set up an account?

helenhismadwife · 09/01/2008 13:25

YANBU at all I would be really annoyed. Its not that easy to open an account using an address different from your own, I live in France and tried to open an account at my mums address (with her consent) I cant remember who it was with now but it was the bank/card details that caused the problem so not sure how it can just happen

LIZS · 09/01/2008 13:34

I could n't see how to pay direct the other day so ended up opening an account , which appeared right at the end of the ordering process. Didn't have to enter any payment card details so they would have had no way of knowing she wasn't resident in UK herself, they will just refer to the delivery address. Can't you forward her the bill ? I'm sure you can still return the stuff (is it for your dd or her ?) as long as it has the labels and is unworn, via a store if you prefer. It would have been nice had she warned you but isn't necessarily a big deal if she plans to pay.

MsHighwater · 13/01/2008 21:39

If it's NEXT won't you also receive copies of the Directory to your address - for which the account will be charged?

You can return items ordered online from NEXT to a store, I believe.
