Solicitors and ducks

Hi, I started a thread yesterday and received some very helpful advice. I need to access a solicitor and get the "ducks in a row". However I have ADHD and am hopeless with paperwork and don't know where anything is. I also don't know what I actually need. I do have my own pension statements on line. I think I can find the most recent mortgage statement. We don't have savings (one of the many issues), no investments. What else do I need?

Also how do I go about finding a decent solicitor? And how much...I have debt, no money really ☹️. Now everything is so much more online can I get a decent one from elsewhere in the country or would it need to be local? Can't ask on social media as don't want to broadcast my business on there...

I have 2 options

  1. Him buy me out, I'd get about £170k. I could get a mortgage for about £150k, get an ok house near DC school but not ideally where I'd like to go.
  2. Change the mortgage to interest only, he'd give me a lump sum of £50k. I'd stay here for about 5 years. Then sell the house but he wants the £50k paying back then so I'd get half the equity minus £50k. I could then buy a small property in the area I want (I want to move away, a fresh start), DC school no longer an issue, both will have finished. But due to my age in 5 years I could only get a small mortgage. I earn £41k, hope to earn more in a few years and can increase my earning power if I need to buy doing extra consultation work.

You will need to try and find your personal documents if you can, this is a suggested list but it depends on your circumstances
Birth, marriage certificates
Children's birth certificates
Passport
Medical card, covid vaccine card
Bank statement, yours, partners and joint
Credit card statement
Gas, electric, water, phone bill ( as id and proof of residence)
Council tax statement, Electoral Roll card
Your payslip, tax code, national insurance number, pension statements
Partners payslip
Any benefits info
Overnight bag if you need to leave quickly

A lot of that stuff I have online as it's all gone paperless, I think I can locate the council tax bill. I know where the birth and marriage certificates are.

I would print out a copy of what you have, a solicitor may want to see these too
