Would you send someone money...

For holiday funds for yourself and them (your partner) to spend whilst over there if the holiday destination was the partners country? Would it be easier/more convenient that way because it's their home or is it dodgy AF to send them money, especially if you hadn't been dating long?

My Dad was caught by a similar scam. Met, started dating quickly, several visits to the home country, money spent buying land over there, visa for her to move in with him, married, ILR, then suddenly a manufactured row and she was gone. A horrible time, and all I could do was be supportive. I liked her, and hated my suspicions turned out to be founded.

I can see why they think we’re all rich here abroad, a lot of countries are really under developed and what we have is out of reach to them.

You can’t protect him from himself though, you can only stop his mum getting dragged into it.

Katie2017 · 13/02/2022 17:04

@LIZS that already happened with one holiday to another destination...I thought that was dodgy as hell but I couldn't figure out what she was gaining from that but then I don't know if uncle transferred funds that time.
@Puzzledandpissedoff I can't give too many details or will totally out my uncle and partner but you make a good point and can probably take a good guess! Yes could be multiple men involved as seems to have quite a bit of money herself.
@Pippin2028 no the person in question is a woman but the story is interesting as it could be going down the same route (bit early to tell) just reverse the sexes.
@Planetzero1 Doubt my uncle could get any loans or credit cards with his credit but my main worry is him getting his DMs card details or something.

Have they ever actually met?

Lindy2 · 13/02/2022 17:14

There's absolutely no need to transfer funds in advance. It reeks of your Uncle's partner wanting to get hold of the cash before your Uncle travels.

I would be on high alert for Romance Fraud. If it was my relative I'd be contacting the Police on the non emergency number 101 for advice and to report my concerns. I'd also notify his bank of a potential fraud about to take place. Assuming you know who ge banks with of course. I'd like to hope both the police and the bank have procedures in place for this type of concern.

Katie2017 · 13/02/2022 17:18

@PerfectlyImperfectme good link although seems to be mostly for people who have never met the person asking for money but I'll keep it in mind if it comes to having to report.
@Latenightreader am so sorry to hear about your dad, crazy to think what lengths these people go to isn't it. I dread to think this could go on months or longer but if he can't get access to anymore funds I think she'll be gone sharpish. Hope your dad recovered from the experience and perhaps found love in the end?
@Fluffycloudland77 Yep you're right there, mad to think they will trust and take the word of a partner they've only known 5 minutes over their worried family! But it's definitely the pattern, the master manipulators just have them completely snowed and know how to play them. Yeh my main concern is protecting his elderly mum-she does know to not lend him anything or give him access to her cards but I can just see trouble ahead.

It’s what we all want though, to be loved. These people are ruthless.

Sugartitsorahilly · 13/02/2022 18:23

Mate, I wouldn't even send my own family money. Don't be a mug.
