My husband broke up with me a few weeks ago. We have been together for 11 years. Told me he's not happy. Doesn't want to talk about it or do counselling to try and fix it or anything just done. We have one child, we live in rented accommodation which our landlord is selling this year so will have to leave. I think this made the decision for him really. I was a stay at home mom for 7 years, recently started a part time job but no way will it pay for me to live anywhere or survive really. Our child will live with me. I just don't know what to do or where to start really. I don't have any family here I am alone just me and my son. Gave up everything for my husband and now I have nothing. What do I do first please

Go and see a solicitor about child support.
Look at your skills and realistic job opportunities
Get training or working as fast as possible in your circumstances.

I am so sorry op

Sorry, what a shit situation, especially if he won’t consider counselling.
This is what I’d do:
Get legal advice.
Find info online about getting child support from him, you might be able to do this without a solicitor. I would say go through the courts though, if you have an informal arrangement between yourselves he could stop paying, disappear if he wanted to,
Contact your council about housing though I suspect there’s little they can do to help. Can you share with family? This would be cheaper than renting and might give you some breathing space.
Look after yourself, this must have come as a shock and that affects you. Eat well, drink plenty ( but not alcohol if you can avoid it as that’s a depressant)
You will get through this.

I'm really sorry that you're in this situation.

If you have a joint bank account then get an individual one

If you claim child benefit then get it paid into that account

Do an online benefits calculator to work out how much Universal Credit you might get

Housing (this is the hardest bit) and I can't help so you need to wait for a more knowledgeable person.

You can get up to 70% (?) of your childcare paid with UC. You're going to have to look into whether you can claim now if you're not.

How many hours is your part time job? I think that if you claim benefits there's a minimum amount that you need to work (20 hours?) but you need to check and find a job that suits if it's not enough.

Hi all thanks for the replies should of said that I I'm in Ireland so a lot of the benefits are different. Although the outcome is much the same.

I'm so sorry, it is such a shock.

Do you have family that you could move to?

Mrsmom2020 · 07/02/2022 21:18

No not here unfortunately

I think your priority is to claim benefits, child support and to secure housing. I don’t know whether any of that needs a solicitor which will cost you money you don’t have. I’d not be too eager to get told you need to claim benefits for E200 ph.

Is their any money in the marriage, savings or pensions? If so that might mean you need legal advice further down the line. I’d split the savings for now to get a property.

Find out his plans. Better to be reasonably local so you can rely on each other and be there for the child. If he is planning a major relocation then consider a more affordable location for yourself. These days small and easy to heat is your friend.

One priority should be to get yourself registered for social housing with as many organisations that provide it asap. Then you can start looking for affordable options.
