Panic alarm by my bedside ........

Queenie6655 · 16/01/2022 00:29

My 4 year old asked me earlier why we sleep with a panic alarm linked to the police station monitored by an agency

How do I explain its because her father assaulted her when she was 4 months and then tried to kill her mother ??

Do I ever fully explain this to her or say that it is there to keep us safe and try to not mention the mad bastard who ruined our lives?????

Really struggling to deal with this today xxxxx

I think like anything incredibly hard, you give small amounts of true information which are age appropriate.

"It's to keep us safe" may be enough for now. If she asks questions; age appropriate, small pieces. When she's older, you can tell her more.

I'm so sorry.

Yes the little nuggets to come as they are relevant at an age appropriate time?

Gosh poor innocent girl I'm just glad she is safe and made it out alive

I would normalise it to an extent and say it's so we can get help if we NEED to. The abuse can be explained when she is older x

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/01/2022 00:39

You both did.

I'm horrified he's not still inside though.

So if we ever need a police woman we can get one just like that. But I don't think we will, it's just nice to have.

That way it doesn't seem as terrifying right ?

Let's keep hoping they send this bastard down soon

He's spouting a lot of stuff about conspiracy against him and that I have been warning the witnesses about what to say

The man has lost his mind

I don't think it's something I would let my 4 year old be aware of. Having said that I have never been in your position, so I can't make a reasonable judgment. Thanks

I hope he gets his time

thequeenoftarts · 16/01/2022 01:14

oh lovely, hugs to you xx

Queenie6655 · 16/01/2022 12:11

Not something I wanted to bring up with her

She saw it and pressed it and I had to re set the alarm or the police would have phoned me

And then I just said what it was

But was wondering really if it is ok to leave it for a while now and maybe talk about it if she asks when older?

Thanks all xxxxx

I think this is exactly the right form of words to use, for many, many reasons. I fervently hope that your panic button gets dusty and rusty as you never need to use it.

Thank you xxx

So sorry to hear this, but can you normalise it in any way? e.g. my elderly parents have an alarm so they can call for help if my DM falls. Sometimes they press it accidentally and there's a voice asking if they need help. It's similar.

Sorry I didn't respond and say thanks to all the posters

Thankfully we did not need to use it

So good to have it though
