Is he taking the Mick?

Partner took early - very early - retirement. I'm not old enough for that, have a very busy job that's not 9-5 and go to the gym most evenings. We don't live together. Things have drifted because he hasn't the money for anything. I've paid for everything, holidays, meals, transport. He makes no suggestions or arrangements. Not even a walk and a drink. As a result I've been focusing on my friends and myself for social life.

Challenged this and he says he's paid for so much over the years he's been working that he doesn't feel guilty about it. I feel used and furious. I also feel emotionally distant and foolish. He goes on about us not having sex but I don't want to have sex with someone like this.

Have tried to address it but nothing changes. We went out last night and he was cross because he said there was nothing he likes on the menu. I get the brunt of this. eventually he chose something but I'm sick of it all now.

Am I unreasonable or what?

It sounds like your relationship has reached its end. I'd be properly upset by being labelled as having not paid my way when that's not true. He's chosen not to work and presumably has some money to spend if he chose to do so but has been happy ride on your coattails for the last year. How dare he say he feels entitled to sit back and let you pay.

He decided to take early retirement and got a year's tax free salary. He has a pension and has no mortgage. He probably has savings as well. Yet he expects you to pay for his meals out and holidays. Then when you mention to him he told you he has been paying your share for years which has not been the case. The truth is he is using you. If you calculated the amount of money you spent on meals out and holidays for him it was not cheap.
I am wondering did he think if he took early retirement that you be happy to keep paying for his extras?
Along with this he is 10 years older than you and being honest your at different life stages.
I feel that in time he might need care and expect you to do this as well so I would not walk away from him but run. Be thankful he has shown you his true colours.

Get.rid.

I think the rewriting history to justify his entitledness would be the most enraging part of this. It’s definitely a relationship killer.

Bookworm20 · 05/01/2022 13:36

He is definitely taking the mick, yes.
Essentially what he is saying is that if you want to stay in a relationship with him you foot the bill for it.

Time to step back I think. Let him spout the crap about paying for you all those years, he knows its not true. It's just the only thing he can think of to justify no longer being able to take you out.

He choose to take early retirement. Let him enjoy it. Alone.

No he’s essentially using you, I wouldn’t want to fuck someone like that. I think it’s disgusting you are paying for everything, he should be at least paying half or you take it in turns. Such a turn off and so unromantic too.
