Are C-Section babies more chilled/relaxed?

My sister has just had a c section to the most peaceful/chill little girl.

In contrast, her son who is now nearly 5 was born naturally (quite a difficult labour) episiotomy needed after hours of pushing, he is a firecracker and has a totally different temperament.

I am hearing more and more people say that having a c section baby they have a chill baby!!!! Is there something in this I wonder??

No traumatic pushing and moving through mums body..!

@BendingSpoons

There's some thought that a c-section is a shock to babies, as it's so sudden, and that could potentially be as/more traumatic than a vaginal birth, particularly if the vaginal birth is straightforward.
Yes this is what I thought.

Mine were both sections. DD1 a very calm EMCS after a failed induction. Fiery character, difficult baby with silent reflux.

DD2 was an ELCS but it was more traumatic as she was large and transverse so they couldn't get her out and when they did she needed to be resuscitated. I then had a hemorrhage. So not the lovely calm experience on DD1 at all. But DD2 is the calmest, happiest baby you'll meet, very healthy and a good sleeper from day one.

So I'd say zero correlation between delivery and temperament in our house.

I had two born vaginally. First wad a long drawn out induction with a near emergency ventouse yanking at the end. Chilled perfectly calm wonder baby and subsequent every-parent's-dream child. No tantrums, just wonderful in every way.

Second was a nice straight forward vagina birth, couple of hours of pushing and then out popped DC2 who is much more of a handful.

Complete luck of the draw.

The point about vaginal babies having better health outcomes on average has a wealth of scientific evidence behind it

Anecdotally I think first babies are generally the sensitive overbearing monster child, whereas seconds are generally more chill. I'm aware mine buck this trend.

Interesting .. my DS was born by EMCS and was/is extremely chilled (still is at 20 Grin) and a brilliant sleeper ... but I doubt it was the CS ... just his temperament. I never had another so nothing to compare.

Absolutely not. Two csection babies, two absolute crazy kids

BananaPB · 07/10/2021 09:32

I've had 3 vaginally. 3 were colicky and grumpy while the third was super chilled.

blushmint · 07/10/2021 09:39

3 births. 1, semi traumatic - drama llama intense from day 1.

  1. I nearly died, baby died.
  2. More traumatic than the rest. Chilled out baby, breastfeeds perfectly, slept through the night since day 2.

Honestly, if it wasn't thanks to modern medicine, an emergency crisis leading to a c section is natural selection.

NamiSwan · 07/10/2021 09:56

No, this is a ridiculous to thing to even ask, sorry 😆

Three natural births here. First birth was traumatic for me, my eldest is the most chilled child ever. Second birth was a lovely home birth, very relaxed etc. My second child is a demon 😆😆 third birth also pretty traumatic, DD3 is 14 months old and seems to take more after 5 year old than my 8 year old 😅 but sleep better than the both of them ever did!

so basically absolutely nothing to do with the birth and everything to do with innate personality!

DPotter · 07/10/2021 10:00

You clearly haven't met my DD!

Although I suppose there's always an exception to prove the rule!!!

JustThisLastLittleBit · 07/10/2021 10:05

All 3 DCs were CS, two emergency and the third elective. They were all pretty chill babies and have grown into pretty chill adults. It’s anecdotal, but I think the fact that I had no birth trauma or injuries (aside from the bloody massive scar) and was kept in hospital for 5-7 days to recover (26-29 years ago) meant I was a chilled and happy mum to them, which helped their development I’m sure.

PinkPlantCase · 07/10/2021 10:19

Water birth at home, delayed chord clamping, skin to skin for hours and a very chilled baby.

Fed perfectly, didn’t really cry for about 2 weeks.

Bells3032 · 07/10/2021 10:28

my sister was a natural delivery and was the most placid baby. i was a c-section and was apparently a grizzly nightmare so doesn't mean anything
