Also, did you go to relationship counselling? If so, did it help?

I can tell you what I did but ultimately our relationship didn't survive.
I was the only one who was willing to try and I got fed up of giving. So I guess, both of you have to want it to work and be prepared to put the effort in.
Any doubt or unwillingness will show you it isn't worth spending time on imo.

In the case of me and my husband we had a very bad patch a good many years ago, no third party involved but it concerned a business venture (my husband's first), which had gone seriously wrong and we each had different ideas of how to deal with and move forward.

What happened is that we both realised how important we were to each other and that we would always support each other. Basically we loved each other but a particular issue had changed how we talked and acted towards each other. We made it work and never looked back.
