How do you become successful?

I seem to have a few old mates, aquaintances who have become massively successful at their chosen careers. I took a wrong turn and lost the plot when I had kids, and it’s taken me a ridiculously long time to get some semblance of confidence back. I want to set up a business but struggle daily with focus and lack of self belief and housework and listening to various ancient relatives and Dh gong on.
How do I get focussed/ get going/ make progress? How do I get the mindset that successful people have? What even is it?
I feel like I’m pushing a massive moving cloud of stuff, and it’s just reforming around me.im just getting nowhere.
Tips very very welcome!

@DENNYCRANE

Remember that for many of us, myself included, a contented, lazy, stress-free life IS success.

I love this. Sadly, in the eyes of the world I’m extremely successful……and also extremely stressed most of the time. I wish I could be more like you. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks all. I’m slowly getting rid of years of clutter which is actually helping my mind feel more focussed and positive. I guess something to do with hanging on to loads of old tat, just in case is kind of subconsciously depressing.
Also writing a plan..and this time I’m not going to get overwhelmed!

One - success isn't defined by how much money you make. I set up my own business and I could do more, especially if i didn't dedicate as much time as i do to my kids, friends and boyfriend. I also spend 25% of my time giving my services for free to an important cause. I could change things to make a lot of money but money isn't my motivation.

Two- I learned this in a workshop. Make a list of what needs doing.

And do the small easy things first.

Why? Because if we look at tackling the big daunting things we don't get started and we feel more and more overwhelmed.

If we do the little wasy things - we get a lot more done and we feel happier and more empowered and more likely to tackle the big things (which usually aren't big things at all).

Also, don't try and do it all yourself. Concentrate on what you're good at and get help with the other stuff (eg accounting, marketing, cleaning etc).

I'm getting a cleaner this week and will soon hire a virtual assistant.

Oh and most importantly just get started. It won't be perfect but next year you'll be a lot better at it because you started this year.

Noone is perfect. You learn as you do.

Version 1 won't be as good as version 2. But there will be no version 2 if there was no version 1.

Also there are a lot of helpful business communities and memberships out there which offer support, solidarity, community and accountability.

Litgal · 04/07/2021 12:57

Sakurami - that is good advice. Could you give any recommendations of these business communities and memberships?

xksismybestletter · 04/07/2021 13:09

There is a lot of positive slogans and business talk gonig on here OP, but I'm not getting any sense if what the business might be. Is it actually something that is going to bring you success or are you talking about selling old tat or MLM?

The way I became successful was by going to work everyday for years. A several points could I have struck out on my own. (But I haven't for a number of reasons, including my motivation needs a strong goal)

If I were you I would start with the job and then branch into my own thing from there

Sakurami · 04/07/2021 13:44

@Litgal

It really depends on your niche and your location and what you want to do as there are loads. If you tell me a little bit about that, I may be able to recommend some.

Otherwise search on Facebook. Join a few and get a feel for them.

@Sakurami

I am interested in life coaching, having a you tube channel, Reiki and personal training type businesses. Health and well being genre.
I like in Berkshire.

The other day someone on MN quoted Roosevelt: Comparison is the thief of joy.

WhyMrsRobinson · 04/07/2021 22:37

Oh I didn’t know that was Roosevelt, it’s certainly something every life coach says! And it’s true too. I am comparing myself to people who have had much differenter (?!) opportunities/ lives.
kismybestletter no, it’s creating stuff that I used to create for a career, so I guess I have the background, and probably buried deep are the skills too. Just seem to have lost that organised, ambitious, confident, ‘ if it all goes wrong I’ll wing it ‘ feeling. But I guess that was pre kids. A different life!
It’s just that even with lists I just don’t seem to get anything much done, and there is so much to do.
Thanks Sakurami, good advice indeed. I like the trying small things first advice and will try it tomorrow. Giving services free to a good cause - that’s a great idea. I think that would motivate me more actually.
