I dont know uch about margeret thatcher, however, you'll be pleased to know, i was brought up a strict labour partier, and from a VERY young age(late 80's), was taught to blow rasberries at her each time she was on tv.{grin] i however know nothing about it.

"There is no such thing as society".

MeMySonAndI · 16/11/2007 19:41

Supporting Pinochet (of all people she could support...why to choose a mass killer?

Can you punch him on my behalf?

bruhaha · 16/11/2007 19:42

i agree with fio fio - especially as i'm from scotland and she did nothing for us, i won't even tell you what my dad used to say when she came on the tv - but it had to do with fire and pee!!! we all worked in the steel industry - nobody liker her.

corblimeycharlie · 16/11/2007 19:43

Agree with fiofio - just punch him and be done with it. There is no known cure for Toryism, you might as well feel better.

Tinker · 16/11/2007 19:43

Banning trade unions at GCHQ

I'd just go with punching him though

chankins · 16/11/2007 19:45

What exactly does he claim was good about her ?

Desiderata · 16/11/2007 19:47

You'd have to punch me then too, DrN

I know how you feel, though. I couldn't marry someone who voted Labour!

PrunersOfEight · 16/11/2007 19:49

I couldn't marry a Tory.
I could marry a floating voter, but a true blue Tory, no.
You can get into a very long discussion about US politics of the time and how she strove to court/emulate Reagan, who was of course a complete loon and a puppet. The rise of the neocons and how their world view influenced hers (and continues to influence us as a nation, to everyone's detriment imo).
Or you can just go with "What? That repellent woman! Don't make me laugh." and then go and make yourself a very stiff drink.

My DH does that (praises thatcher) just to wind his mother up. Usual response is "Ooh DONT talk to me about THAT WOMAN".

Adding to crime list, she laid the trail for the incarnation of New Labour and Tony Blair, her adopted son. Hence responsible for Iraq.

harpsichordsahoy · 16/11/2007 20:16

I mean just

EmsMum · 16/11/2007 20:19

In DHs defence, MIL is one of those old ladies who is like a watch. They have to be wound up from time to time to keep them going.

marthaboo · 16/11/2007 20:24

I went out with a card carrying member of the Tory party once. I wasn't daft enough to marry him though .

Just drown him out by chanting "Thatcher Thatcher Milk Snatcher!"

Or punch him.

shimmy · 16/11/2007 20:27

FGS what are you doing woman? Get out of there fast. Leave him right now before he subjects you to any more of this foul abuse.

Pollyanna · 16/11/2007 20:30

wasn't it her that introduced the right to buy for council tenants thus reducing the amount of cheap housing stock for those people who may need it?? (of course some people, and maybe your dh , would think this is a Good Thing).

The miners strike - again he might think it was a Good Thing to break the miners and the unions.

I think you are onto a loser really. I second the punching suggestion

PrunersOfEight · 16/11/2007 20:36

Right to buy = getting people tied to mortgages = scared to default = no longer free to strike

clever but essentially evil

hildegard · 16/11/2007 20:36

A good healthy political discussion can only enliven the breakfast table conversation.
Have fun.

yy true perhaps but the timing of it was brilliant - it helped break the unions

i went out with a tory.

it didn't last.

he started spouting off about people taking tickets on trains and how much money they made and how much it pissed him off and i just blurted, 'obviously your life is circling the bowl if that's what you've got to be peeved about.'

PrunersOfEight · 16/11/2007 21:04

I am slightly too young to remember that, yes
OTOH living here in the eighties was bloody depressing as well, wasn't it?
