How can I stop myself being constantly being spammed by petition emails a friend wants me to sign?

I don't want to embarrass her but it's getting on my tits. I have a nice friend who lives far away & we keep in touch over email. I'm happy with this. But she's into campaigning for causes & often sends me petitions to sign for all sorts. I just bin them because I'm not interested but I get fed up of it. We're talking 2 - 3 times a week. How can I get this to stop without her feeling shamed & spoiling the friendship? I don't believe this is anything to do with a spambot because she talks in her distinctive style on these emails.

Is she sending them to you directly or are they coming from an official petition site? If they're coming through the site, go on it and there will be an option somewhere to stop them sending any more emails to you.

If they are coming from her I would just quietly delete them and not engage. Does she spam them to several people at once?

I've just looked at the latest one again. It's addressed to her email. So either she's forwarding something or it is being spammed from her account. It starts 'dear friend but ends with her name..

Can you not set a filter so they are automatically deleted?

FarmerBrian · 20/04/2021 08:41

I could but there's no way to differentiate between her chatty emails & the petition ones... I'm quite happy to receive chatty ones.

You could set up a filter to delete emails that have "petition" in the text, for instance.

FarmerBrian · 20/04/2021 09:00

Oooh I'll look into that..

Depending on what email client you using, you can normally filter on keywords etc, bit harder on devices like phones and tablets.
Or just tell her to stop sending?

FetchezLaVache · 20/04/2021 10:03

Coward's way out i.e. what I'd do - tell her you've signed up for notifications directly with the petition sites and have therefore already heard about the causes before she forwards them to you. You could tell her it's a bit much to be hearing about each campaign twice so ask her to stop sending them.

Swap to a different way of communicating, use WhatsApp of Facebook messenger, and then ignore all emails Grin
