What would you think?

If you started dating someone (in his 50s, single for a few years), knowing that you were physically not their usual type (but that their usual type - younger, beautiful - wasn't really working out for them) and, after a couple of weeks, they randomly told you they'd been thinking about "past loves lost" would you think they were trying to come to terms with the fact they felt their days of dating someone they found attractive were gone and they were trying to come to terms with, or reconcile, dating someone they weren't as attracted to?

I did. Was I right to do so?

I would walk away. Nothing worse for your self esteem than feeling second best

I0NA · 14/04/2021 09:26

I don’t know if you were right or not. But I’d think they were a wanker and I’d dump them.

Life is full of 50 year old single men who believe that they are entitled to date young slim and beautiful women 20 something women “ because it’s their type “.

Grumblesigh · 14/04/2021 09:29

I would ask the person what they meant.

GardenLantern · 14/04/2021 09:30

Thank you. I did do.

Just wanted to make sure that I wasn't overthinking it!

I did dump, I meant.

I don't need to hear someone tell me that I'm not 'good enough' for them but they're making do.

I'm in my 40s. I'm not slim or beautiful. I'm just, well, normal! It's not the first time I've encountered this sort of attitude.

I can't see it ever being any different! I think I need to just accept it.

Well its good that you spotted that red flag so early on and dumped the loser.

ThatOtherPoster · 14/04/2021 09:45

The fact you know his usual type is “young and beautiful” is a red flag in itself. How did you know that? I’m guessing because he told you? Twat.

My first DH was like this but I didn’t have the wisdom to dump him. He once told me I was the oldest woman he’d ever dated, in a voice that made “older” sound inferior. I was 28!

I’m glad you had the wisdom to cut your ageing, wistful, confidence-trampling idiot loose.

Washingtofold · 14/04/2021 12:57

Ummm I’d think fuck that . Life’s too short for me to spend with someone who thinks I’m somehow less attractive because I’m older
I’d tell him good luck in finding someone he’s attracted to but I’m not prepared to waste my life on a man who thinks younger and thinner automatically means more attractive

@GardenLantern

I did dump, I meant.

I don't need to hear someone tell me that I'm not 'good enough' for them but they're making do.

The mystery of why he's been single for a few years solved then Smile
