Twin flame relationships

I've been reading up on twin flame relationships, it sounds interesting. Is this a "real thing" or just an instant connection/pull you could get with any random person.

Thoughts appreciated :)

If you want to hear other people's personal experiences and their thoughts on the matter, that makes sense, however, how would you assign anyone the authority to tell you if something like this is real or not? It's like me going on Mumsnet and asking if chakras are a 'real thing' or not, or asking if ghosts exist.

It's risky because because if you think you are in a "twin flame" relationship you may stay with someone who is very bad for you - just because you labeled it twin flame.

There's just no point to labeling a relationship twin flame. It serves no purpose.

AndreaMarteau · 10/04/2021 18:27

It's bullshit. If you read up up on it, a twin flame relationship is one where there's a 'runner' and a 'chaser'. One or both of could be in another relationship or even married.

I like to watch tarot card readings on YouTube and they often do general readings for 'twin flames'. There'll usually be lots of comments underneath along the lines of 'I've been waiting ten years for us to come into union' or 'he's with someone else but I know he'll come back to me'.

It's an excuse for people to behave badly or to excuse others bad behaviour and it has the dynamic of a narcissist/co dependent relationship but if you were really part of the same soul (and I don't for one second believe any of this) surely it wouldn't be such hard work. It's a romantic spin on a fucked up relationship.

I'm of the Tim Minchin school of thought:

Wanderlusto · 10/04/2021 18:49

Someone is right for you or they aren't.

My understanding of it was that the twin flame is never actually alive at the same time as yourself anyway. They are in spirit. They are not meant to be with you either way.

The truth is there are suitable people (plural) out there for everyone.

And there are horrible bastards who may have sex appeal and magnetism up to the hilt but that shouldnt be kept in your life for anything more than a drunken night and quick fumble.

As pp said, the world is chalk full of narcissists and romantic bullshit only serves to excuse codependency and tolerance of shity peoplewhom you shouldn't keep around.

SarahBellam · 10/04/2021 18:55

Tim Minchin speaks the truth!

Cotswoldnewbee · 10/04/2021 18:55

This is interesting, thank you.

@EarthSight maybe my post wasn't clear enough for you. Asking opinions if others believe if this is "real or not".

Can this be summarised? There seems to be a lot of info out there.

Ok I frequent religious/circles and the concept of a twin flame is basically this with certain variations:

Your twin flame and you are basically the same soul split into two, who then incarnate lifetime after lifetime until eventually once some arbitrary point of spiritual development is reached you come into “Union” is reached and then spiritually ascend together (in some interpretations this will be your last incarnation).

The mythological root of this whole idea goes back to Plato, who talked of the Gods being frightened of the potential of mankind and split the original two headed/ four limbed human into man/woman. We then spent our lifetimes frightened, bereft and alone until the literal split halves find each other, experience a strong pull back towards one another and an overwhelming sense of home and completeness.

Various other new age ideas have and can be tacked into this paradigm. Lots of people who feel they are on the twin flame path feel they and their twins have special missions that are supposed raise the collective awareness and development of humanity.

There is an entire cottage industry sprung up around this concept of twin flames amongst tarot readers, life coach types etc etc. However all too often it seems to be a lot of lonely and heartbroken people, waiting for that destined person (called the separation phase), or worse case scenarios putting up with abusers because somehow their unconditional love will win the day in the end.

One area I can get behind though is apparently you won’t attract your twin flame into Union until you can truly love yourself healthily. So anyone who chooses this as their paradigm who are on a road to self acceptance, self knowledge and self actualisation. Who am I to argue?

Hope that helps.

Thanks Dervel

First of all shut up, unless you have experienced a twin-flame love you can not I repeat not comment.
It is the most Heavenly feeling in the world. I'm speaking as someone who is going through it now.
You would be lucky to be chosen by the Divine to experience a love so pure, a love so true and a love that makes your soul shine so brightly. Is it hard yes it is but you will never be the same again once you experience such love. So like I said until you have experience it, just shut up.
