Gay DC sending friend valentine gift

Penguin567 · 05/02/2021 11:22

my DC is 15, and came out as gay to me last year. All her friends know, but no-one in the family. She has I suspect a girlfriend, although am told that they are just friends, so unsure.
She also has a very close friend, who she would like to send a valentine gift and card to. This is genuinely on a platonic basis, but I'm worried that the friend will take this the wrong way, and would not like any hassle for my daughter.
I have tried to speak to her about my concerns, though my daughter still wants to send the gifts. I'm maybe worrying far too much, I just dont want any negative repercussions.
What are your thoughts?

I get your concern. Has she always sent this friend gifts for valentines in previous years?

I have a 15 yo dd who claims to be bi. So do quite a few of her friends which makes me think they might see it as cool. Not saying that to disparage your dd, just to set the context.

Anyway she and her friends are very gushy and emotional. It's all 'I love you so much'. All of them write each other messages online and on birthday cards which sound akin to love letters (with no sexual references though!). If she told me she was sending one or all of them valentines, I'd see it as more of the same kind of thing.

Maybe my dd and her friends are unusual but I doubt it. They feel emotional about their friendships and they express themselves in a way I never would have done at their age.

I wouldn't worry in your situation. The friend may think it is just a friendly gesture. If she thinks it's more than that, how is that different from someone of the opposite sex sending a valentine to someone they fancy who doesn't reciprocate?

I think a lot of girls do this for their special friends-Galintines day has become popular in recent years so I would not worry, I doubt her friend will think it is a love gift-I bet she gets her something as well.

I went to an all girls school and had quite a few friends who were gay. I'm straight. I definitely wouldn't have thought they had any romantic intentions towards me just because they sent me a valentines card or gift. It was just a nice thing people did for their friends. I think if they are truly good friends, the friend will understand what it means. I wouldn't overthink it and just let them get on with it.

Galentines is a real thing? Thought it was just in parks and recreation!

Penguin567 · 05/02/2021 15:17

I hadn't even heard of it until today..have never watched parks and recreation..I dont think my daughter has, so i think it must be!
I did google the phrase, and parks and recreation came up
