Age Gaps

Single and 38 and whilst dating is out of the question currently with the pandemic, using this time to think about what i am looking for in a future partner.

Personally i much prefer dating someone close to my own range as at similar life stage and have more in common. I would never in a million years be interested in anyone who was old enough to be my parents.

Just wondered what other 30 something single people thought was too big of an age gap?

I met my DH when I had just turned 33 , he was almost 16 years older than me . We had the same kind of intrests and had worked in the same industry as me so we had plenty to talk about ( and bore each other with ) on our 1st few days .
We were very happy together

I'm 50 and I'm very glad I'm not stuck with a husband aged 66 now.

Whirlwind14 · 07/01/2021 22:42

Dh is 13 years older- I’m 39, he’s 52. We have 2 very young children and it works well!

poshredrose · 07/01/2021 22:43

I'm 35, my dh is 55. Would I have planned that age gap? No, but we're happy

I always stick with "half your age plus 7 years" as a rule of thumb. EG if the older is 40, the minimum acceptable age for the younger would be 27.

My husband was 15 years older than me and we met when I was 28. However after we split he got with a woman 10 years younger than me - he was older than her parents 👀 I only met them once and don't know what they thought, but I bet it made for awkward Sunday dinners 😂

I'm late 40s now and I can't imagine dating anyone more than 10yrs younger, but I think I'd happily see a guy in his late 60s. Only casually though - I don't ever want another committed relationship. Certainly don't want to end up anyone's carer, or have them be mine shudder

I'm only 42 (ONLY she says 😁) but I've mainly dated older. I married younger (only 7 years) but I defo noticed it. Although that could have been because I didn't want another child and he didn't have any, as well as the fact that he was a mummy boy and I had moved out of my parents house on my own at 16 so was very independent. In any case I refuse to date anyone who is younger than 40 now.
I did briefly date a 50 year old last year and he was a nightmare. I swear I've known 20 year olds with their shit sorted better than he had his. But the main thing for me was I noticed his sex drive was low, really low. Much lower than mine. That could be been his lifestyle though.
Ideally my dating age range would be 40 to 45 but I don't want kids, marriage and probably not to live with anyone again so my situation is different.

10 years tops. Ideally a bit less.

Only because otherwise the younger person has a high chance of playing nurse for a decade or more at the end.

SoundWithoutAName · 08/01/2021 02:09

DH is 9 years older than me but there's no chance I'd date someone that much younger than me. Absolute maximum 5 years younger, and probably no more than 15 years older - if DH and I were ever to split up that is.

Rainbowqueeen · 08/01/2021 03:28

Agree no more than 10. Less is better, especially as you age. Too many women get stuck as carers just when they should be living life and really regret it

My husband is 9 years older than me.
I first met my husband end of April 2014, we became a couple 9th may 2014. We decided to start trying for a baby in July 2014, we moved in together in October 2014, I got pregnant in November 2014, we found out I was pregnant 19th December 2014. We got engaged 13th January 2015, and got married 9th April 2015. Baby was due 30th August 2015, was actually born on 5th September 2015.
So we had been together exactly 11 months the day we got married. I know it's very quick, being married and expecting a baby within less than a year of being together, but it worked for us. We had discussed marriage and both agreed it was what we wanted, but we weren't officially engaged. But when we found out I was pregnant we both knew it was important to us to be married before the baby was born, and I didn’t want to be showing if possible, so we made sure we were. It was perfect. Some people might think we only got married because I was pregnant, but that was never the case at all.
I'd just turned 21 when we met, he was 29. I was a student and he worked full time but we still made it work, and couldn't be happier.
