Is this strange?

Just had a few thoughts about a recent ex and was curious as to whether some of his ideas were a bit strange, or whether they’re usual to others and I just haven’t heard of them. When we lived together, we didn’t have a bin, as he believed they were dirty, so rubbish was put in carrier bags, hung on a cupboard door handle and put out in the wheelie bin a few times a day. He felt baby wipes didn’t clean properly, so our children used to have to be held under the sink and have their bottoms properly washed at every nappy change. He didn’t agree with dogs living inside, as they’re unhygienic, so he wanted my dog to live outside in a kennel and in the garage when the weather was colder. Does anyone else do these things, or are they unusual?

The bin thing is pretty standard. BIg bins in kitchens smell

xanthippe8 · 28/11/2020 18:22

I do the bin thing, I hang a drawstring pedal bin liner on the door handle in the kitchen. No food waste goes in it though, just stuff that can't be composted or recycled. There is a small bin in the bathroom and that's it.

I also don't have a bin, but a carrier bag hung on my cordless Dyson which is attached to the wall. I have had bins in the past, but after a few days, they can get utterly gross. I much prefer taking my rubbish out each night, though I am considered a bit OCD lol

If he's a hygiene freak how is washing a child's pooey bum in the sink acceptable?

AudTheDeepMinded · 28/11/2020 18:59

We got rid of our kitchen bin when the kids were small, too much foraging for toast crusts in it and chucking away of shoes when I wasn't watching! We had a small bag daily but now I have a fancy wall mounted very small bin from a certain Swedish shop! The other stuff sounds like my DHs family. His mum used to rinse new clothes in dettol! (barking).

My parents used the carry bag hanging off a door handle thing. It looked so gross and plate scrapping and tea bag drips stained the door and handle. It’s just plain weird and definitely not something I carried forward into my own adult life.

Isolatedizzy · 28/11/2020 20:05

I don't get this hanging a bag on a cupboard door for a day, why not just have a small bin & empty it every evening? Confused

I think a bag hanging around all the time would annoy me more than a bin!

Lora88 · 28/11/2020 23:38

The carrier bag and dog I can see his point I’m slightly ocd so don’t have pets and sounds like he is too to be honest , the baby wipes thing though is very weird

Ilovedacake · 28/11/2020 23:59

He was a ‘clean freak’ but funnily enough only in his own home. He would forever tell me off for “not respecting” his home and not doing things how he approved, yet at my home he spilt his tea over my brand new sofa and cushions, spilt things over my carpet and that was all ok.

Well he's obviously an idiot then and you're well rid

Badwill · 29/11/2020 06:52

Carrier bag hanging off a door seems dirtier than a bin to me and must look tacky as can be. Couldn't have that in my kitchen.

Plenty of people don't like pets in the house so that's not too odd (it is dirty having them inside) even so I couldn't do it to my dog.

The bum washing in the sink seems such a faff! To be fair I have often thought it myself while changing a nappy that wipes really don't really clean properly, but who could be arsed/have the time for washing in the sink every time?! Excessive and unnecessary if you're bathing the child every evening.

He seems anal, those type are draining to live with I'm glad you got rid!

isitsnowingyet · 29/11/2020 07:12

I know people who also have a carrier bag full of rubbish instead of a bin which is considered 'dirty'.

That alone would drive me nuts

isitsnowingyet · 29/11/2020 07:15

And - my kitchen bin does not smell, as it is kept clean Confused

KatherineJaneway · 29/11/2020 07:22

Yes it is strange.

If the choice was between the dog 🐕 and him, the dog would win!

Pinkyandthebrainz · 29/11/2020 07:24

He felt baby wipes didn’t clean properly, so our children used to have to be held under the sink and have their bottoms properly washed at every nappy change.

I dont think anybody on earth could make me do something with my child that I didn't want to do. There's no 'have to' about it. Why did you allow him to rule the roost?

fatherfintanstack · 29/11/2020 11:44

Plenty of people agree with keeping dogs outside, and think bum wiping isn't thorough compared to washing. Hence a lot of countries have hoses or jugs next to the loo, or bidets. The bin thing is preference. These are just different habits.

However, with your update about nagging you to 'respect' his house, his insistence on doing things a certain way builds a picture of quite a fussy, draining man whom I would be getting a bit sick of too, especially if he wasn't careful with your things so showed a lack of self awareness.
