Can anyone offer some advice please. I'm looking for a contraceptive pill, I can buy online that will at least make my periods lighter.

Are you in the UK? If so, can you go to your GP or sexual health clinic where they can advice you on suitable contraception, your prescription will also be free

thecatsarecrazy · 25/11/2020 10:45

I've tried docs before and was prescribed rigevidon. I didn't get on with it

Could you get the implant? That stopped periods for me completely until I had it taken out.

sosickofthisshit · 25/11/2020 10:55

I'm on Cerazette, which has stopped my periods completely

GoldenNCurly · 25/11/2020 10:56

I had the implant which didn't stop my periods but the contraceptive injection did. Can you go back to your gp or a gum clinic and work with them to find a more suitable contraception for you? I have used 5 different types of contraceptive over 10 years until I found one that suited me

username200 · 25/11/2020 10:56

Cerazette here too. Can't remember when my last period was. Since starting it I had lots of random bleeding for a few months then nothing.

Avery7 · 25/11/2020 10:58

Ask your gp if you can try a progesterone-only pill for a few months. If you like it then you can get the arm implant, which works in the same way and lasts for 3 years.

Thingsdogetbetter · 25/11/2020 11:22

Go back to GP. It's their job to changes meds that you don't get on with. Don't let them fob you off! Ask for a female doctor if a male doctor is lacking understanding (as so often happens).

Far more sensible than try random stuff off the internet recommended by randoms.

I use yasmin to stop myself having periods.
Have you heard of continuous pill taking?

Instead of taking the weeks break to allow yourself to have the false period you just keep taking the pill. I can take around 10 packs back to back before I will have a small breakthrough bleed. Some women might not be able to do it for that long though!

It's perfectly safe and is actually even more effective as a contraception when done this way!

If you google NHS continuous pill taking you will find all the info!
I buy mine from superdrug online. The only issue is that I run out of the 6 months prescription in 4.5 months so it costs a bit more to take it continuously but it's worth it to skip periods!

MMmomDD · 25/11/2020 13:59

You can also try a coil, which often leads to stopping periods. But it takes a few weeks of potentially frequent bleeding to get there.

But whatever you do - do NOT just get something off the Internet!!!! See a doctor.

I was told off by my doctors for doing this! They would not give me another prescription unless I agreed to take it as 3 months back to back then have a break for a period but I'd definitely read it was ok to always take them back to back! Which is what I had been doing and why I got told off...the Drs said I was too early to be getting my next prescription Hmm

How can I get them to change their mind...

DeeandraReynolds · 25/11/2020 14:04

Go back to the doctors. Many people don't get on with their contraception. There is usually some trial an error.

FWIW, friends swear by the injections and also the Mirena Coil which apparently made their periods stop entirely.

user1481840227 · 25/11/2020 14:08

@Jonsnowsghost
When was that?

It's been done for a long time but I think it was early last year when the NHS updated their advice to say it's all perfectly fine (officially).

I wonder could you get a copy of the guidelines mentioned here and give it to your GP.

I take desogestrel its a progesterone only pill that you take every day. Literally stopped my periods, haven’t had one in years.

Jonsnowsghost · 25/11/2020 14:10

@user1481840227

I think it was 2018 when they officially said I couldn't but up until my check over appointment this year it's been the same and they refuse to budge.

I think next time I go I'll ask again. Or just start buying them online!

user1481840227 · 25/11/2020 14:11

Or maybe ask the group mentioned what to do if your GP doesn't accept the new guidelines?

www.fsrh.org/home/

Sorry i'm not in the UK so i'm not 100% sure of the organisations but they were the group mentioned in the news article.. but that's probably what I would do..surely GPs should be keeping up to date with all of the of new guidance as it is updated!

Dontbeme · 25/11/2020 14:19

Cerazette here too, for about two years now and no period in that time. I don't know myself, no cramping, discomfort, nothing. I feel so much better and can be more physically active as a result.

VictorianChair · 25/11/2020 14:22

Mirena coil stopped my periods.

Fudgsicles · 25/11/2020 14:40

I've been on various contraceptions as there is loads that doesn't agree with me. GP surgery is always happy to try something else so just go back and say that you didn't get on with that pill and want to try somthing else.

Badwill · 25/11/2020 14:59

Azalia pill here (same as cerazette) I've been spotting every day for the last three weeks it's very annoying! My doctor says this often happens with this pill and it should settle down. I'm going to give it another month or so and see.

rbe78 · 25/11/2020 15:31

I take Microgynon contraceptive pill back-to-back. Like a previous poster, I can take it continuously for 4-6 months period free, and then I'll have a light breakthrough bleed. Highly reccommend.

Interestingly, the reason the pill was ever designed to be taken three weeks on, one week off was becuase the (male) doctors and researchers thought women would prefer to still have a period. Yes, please, I would love to bleed unncessesarily out my genitals...

Avery7 · 25/11/2020 15:40

@user1481840227 @Jonsnowsghost
I'm curious why you prefer taking a combined pill every day rather than going on a progesterone-only pill which is designed to be taken daily?

I read that it was the weeks bleed was also to please the pope because it made contraception seem like it was more natural Confused

but yep some women do prefer to bleed, I'm always telling my friends to try continuous pill taking because their periods seem to affect their lives so much but they said they'd feel too paranoid that they were pregnant if they didn't have the period every month...

but as it's not a real period anyway wouldn't a woman get the fake period even if she was actually pregnant?

I just take it continuously and if I am sexually active at that time I take a pregnancy test every month or 6 weeks which works for me just to be case. Very certain that I do not want any more children so I always have to be sure!

Yasmin was the first contraception I ever tried and absolutely love it! I used it before I knew about continuous pill taking. I get no PMS at all and perfectly stable hormones through the month and never had any negative side effects so I never tried to switch to any other pill.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 25/11/2020 15:44

If you are asking because your periods are unusually heavy and/or painful, then that is an issue in itself which your GP should address.

I took Depo Provera (the injection) for about 10 years and it pretty much stopped my periods. Occasionally I'd get light (panty liner sufficient) 1-2 day periods, maybe 3 per year. However other women on it have reported it made their periods worse. So it's one of those things you have to try.
