Hi me and my partner are separating and we share a tenancy but he is the only one that can afford the current house rent and I can't afford to move somewhere cheaper either so I have contacted my local council to see if there is any help for me and my two children? I've put down "homeless" due to being unable to afford the house alone and my ex partners mental health issues he won't be menally fit enough to be going through figuring out where or what to do.. But as I'm on the tenancy do you think the council will turn me down with help?

Xx

Where are you OP? I don't need to know exactly, just where in the UK?

Slr27 · 13/09/2020 17:56

We are in east Sussex

I just meant England or Wales etc but that's even better! Grin

Ok, your council has something called STEPS: If you live in Eastbourne, Lewes or Wealden, contact STEPS West – Phone: 01323 436414. Text: 07970 668106. Email: [email protected]

If you live in Hastings or Rother, contact STEPS East – Phone: 0300 123 2422 (local rate). Text: 07944 140016. Email: [email protected]

You can find out more information about STEPS to stay independent on East Sussex 1Space.

Who would be my first port of call on Monday.

Here's info from Shelter on finding housing. There are a couple of search engines where you can look for landlords that accept housing benefit and there's more info about that here.

You are considered 'priority need' if you are homeless and have children. You can read more about that here.

Sorry, not STEPS that's for over 60s! Home Works, which you can read about here.

Thank you, will they not just see it as making myself intentionally homeless due to be on a joint tenancy?

It's considered a relationship breakdown, so no but I would contact Home Works, explain the situation and they will tell you what to do from there. You can still make an application for homelessness due to a relationship breakdown.
