DH feeling stressed/scared/sad, wanted to be hugged. I told him that it must be bad for him + I am sorry he is going through a head time.
He was offended + said I was disrespectful.

Was I?

I think it's the result of different viewpoints. He thinks his fears and worries are based on reality, you think the root cause is his anxiety. He wanted you to empathise with him and support his perception of reality. It doesn't sound like you are wrong but he probably needs a different approach and professional support. Whilst you were not unkind in how you said it, what you said is one degree of separation away from telling someone who is depressed or suffering anxiety to get a grip, man up etc and that just isn't helpful to them.

Maybe he should go and shag his buddies then.

I understand what you mean, but what should I have said? I am sure that “You know, I am sure you have the coronavirus. Forget about the test. The test was wrong you have corona... probably you are already at death door. Was nice knowing you, Rest In Peace“ wouldn’t have helped, would it?

Sorry op but if sounds like bullshit and he sounds like a pita to me.

In fact the "you can do no right", you dont "respect me", other people get me but you don't sounds like a firm if abuse to me.

However you act or whatever you say, isn't right us it.

Sounds like training to pander to him, but he's still not happy.

@PassTheSherry But I think “thats horrible“ would have been wrong because there is not really anything horrible happening here. He doesn’t have the coronavirus. It’s all in his head. I understand it must feel horrible for him but fortunately it’s not real.... and he knows that. He is not delusional.
