SAHM - I get just under £600 mat allowance per month. I do the grocery shop at Aldi and top up shops in our local super market. I buy clothes for our two DC (2yrs and 3 months) and myself (mostly supermarket stuff), pay for travel including fuel for my car and any other bits like coffee, soft play, haircuts, occasional coffee/cake for the family when we're all out, presents, cards etc. I find it a stretch and I'm constantly trying to make cut backs and putting off buying things I could do with (like a pair of trousers!).
DH - earns appx £4000 per month. Pays mortgage and all bills (between £1500-£2000 pm), buys clothes for himself (discount designer), lunch when he's at work, meals/coffee when we're all out together eg once a fortnight or so. He also puts about £200 pm into savings for our DC, pays into his private pension, pays off debt.
We also have rental income from our second property appx £700pm which goes into savings.
This is a temporary arrangement as I'll go back to work within the next 12 months but just wondering if this seems ok as I'm not used to having so little to spend and more people to spend it on! DH is quite set on putting money into savings whereas I think that while I'm not working we should be putting less away (currently have around £10k in savings) and loosening the purse strings a little so that I can afford to buy myself some trousers without it being such a stretch or having to ask for more money.
