No periods for 4 months - NOT pregnant!

I do have a GP appointment booked but that isn't for another couple of weeks...

Haven't had a period for 4 months now 😔 I am 24 years old. 100% not pregnant - no physical chance - but have even taken countless pregnancy tests regardless just to rule it out even more!

I am not overweight, nor underweight - just a normal 24 year old woman really. Starting to worry that there may be a problem going on down there - ?PCOS, worst case ?perimenopause? I know without official tests I'll never know, but wondered if any of you had any suggestions / have ever been in a similar situation??

Thank you all in advance x

Are you on any kind of contraception? If not then I advise some form of bloodwork to be done to check your hormone levels.

Reginabambina · 04/02/2020 18:10

Have you had regular periods up until this point?

dinosaurrisotto · 04/02/2020 18:59

I'm older than you, but last year my periods stopped for 3 or 4 months. Previously completely regular. Negative pregnancy tests. I went to the doctor as i was worried about early menopause but hormone tests came back normal. The next month my periods started again and have been regular since. No idea what it was all about!!

Have you been dieting or increased your exercise a lot?

MotherAughra · 04/02/2020 19:13

Do you have any additional stress going on? Or been ill recently?

doubledutyHP · 04/02/2020 19:19

You need to have FSH-follicle-stimulating hormone tested. I had the same sytuation at age 35 I was diagnosed with POF premature ovarian failure -early menopase.
But not necesserly you menopausal it can be something different.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 04/02/2020 19:44

Although you're a normal weight, periods can still be disrupted by malnutrition. Have you been following any sort of drastic diet recently, where you've reduced your calorie intake or cut out a food group?

Stress is also a big factor. Mine stopped for a couple of months once when I was going through a really bad time.

shakiwulub9 · 04/02/2020 20:19

Thank you all so much for your input!

I will certainly prompt the GP to refer me for tests for various things, but yes, I have actually been going through a lot of emotional stress for the past few months. I spent November - January signed off work with horrific workplace stress due to bullying (I have now left said workplace and found a lovely new job) so it will be interesting to see if Periods return now that I am happier and calmer at work. I guess I underestimated the impact stress can truly have on our bodies.

It could be any of those things you've all suggested, time will tell I'm sure! Thank you all xx

Polycystic ovaries?

Lookedtwice · 04/02/2020 22:18

I had a regular cycle t he ouch put my teens and early 20s but when I hit my mid 20s my periods would only usually come every 3 or 4 months. Occasionally I’d have one after 4-6 weeks just to throw me but usually it was much longer. They only settled back into a regular 30-36 day cycle towards the end of my 30s. I never found the cause, although I was diagnosed with endometriosis in my
mid 20s but was told that this shouldn’t cause big gaps between periods.

MsPepperPotts · 04/02/2020 22:45

My periods stopped for 9months during a really awful ongoing stressful situation when I was in my mid 20's.

They came back after extricating myself from said situation.
