Adult birthdays

Can I just what are the expectations regarding adult birthdays.
Generally if a birthday of a relative is on a weekend we always go over on the weekend to give a gift. However if it is during the week we tend to go the weekend before the birthdays and drop it off as weekdays are busy with work / after school clubs and making dinner. The exception would be a big birthday.
My Dh’s birthday was Monday last werk and he has yet to receive a card from a single member of his family. They live 15 minutes away. We didn’t expect them the night of his birthday but the weekend before or after - he is a bit gutted to be honest and I know he is a grown adult but a card isn’t too much to expect surely.
Any thoughts ideas ?

I do what you do however generally if u dont arrange a meal out u get them late or if they cba really xx

I have zero expectations for my own birthday. I’d rather just forget about it.

For my close family I’ll either see them on the day if convenient for all, or the person who's birthday it is will arrange a small get together. As an adult I think its up to them to arrange times to see family.

I would normally send a gift voucher

This wouldn't bother me as an adult really- though I rarely see family on their birthdays, we just send one another cards - sometimes late- sometimes forgotten, sometimes with a gift car, it's no big deal really. We rarely all go out and I wouldnt go to someones house for a birthday unless I was invited for a party. I appreciate all families are different though, and do a family dinner for every bday. I don't know how everyone finds the time/inclination.

Did nobody text/say happy birthday on social media etc? If they did surely that is enough.

I wouldn’t be bothered about lack of cards, apart from my big birthdays when I organise a party I don’t receive cards, probably just one from my DH. I usually get some messages and texts which is very nice.

Me and my husband are completely different on birthdays (although his family used to do the same before there were any kids) my family always meet up around birthdays and go for a meal (usually me, my mum and 2 sisters, my niece and nephew and my 2 boys, and any partners that want to come), and we usually do cards and presents and a cake.
My husband usually has a card and money off his parents but nothing off siblings, he gets a text if they remember. But then he's the same with them.

I’m not bothered by cards or present but would expect a message on the day

I recently had an artsy poster made up to include all of my bridesmaids and gave it as present, I think they appreciated it far more than the typical prosecco and voucher etc. What's that got to do with birthdays?

I'd be upset in your dh's position op. I enjoy celebrating my birthday, whether it's a special one or not, and like to think I'm important enough to my family for them to get me a card. I don't expect presents or meals or money or vouchers but some recognition of the fact that it's my birthday is nice. If they all forgot, especially if they usually do remember, I'd be ringing them and asking if there was a problem that I wasn't aware of.

We get cards from our parents, but Facebook messages from the kids. We is us have a nice meal as well and as our birthdays are at each end of the same month we usually do some thing mid month . This year we'll probably go and see our family up north as it's DGD's first birthday.

Shodan · 03/02/2020 16:27

In my family (outside of me and my 2 boys) we only give gifts if we are due to see the person anyway. My mother, sister and I usually have a lunch date around each of our birthdays so would give cards and a gift then.

My brothers never give or get a gift, unless it's a Big Birthday and a party is thrown, which we all attend.

Cards, in our family, rarely get there on the day (my dad used to send them a few days early, but most of us only remember last minute), but we're all used to this and allow up to a week or so for their arrival. It's something of a family tradition, that we joke about.

I do try to get gifts to my nieces and nephew nearish their birthday, but they're fine with a week late (because they like the family tradition Grin)

Most people wish me happy birthday over WhatsApp/ Facebook etc. The only people I get a card from on my birthday are my parents. I don’t get them from any adult siblings or any other family members and wouldn’t expect to.
