Going on DPs house deeds

Been with DP 4 years. He had mortgage before we met and I moved in. We have decided to go in together and with my savings we can pay off the mortgage. Just wondering if anyone has any advice as to what i need to do to protect my investment.

Does anyone know how to go on the title deeds? Does this need to be done via a solicitor?

(I know that for protection we should be married or have civil partnership etc but this is just something I don't want to do at the moment).

Yes you have to do it via a solicitor. I would suggest that you ask to be 'Tenants in Common' with specific % shares of the property .

Speak to a solicitor, you can do tenants in common or you can have something like a deed of trust where you each specify the amounts you've put into the property and how the remainder should be split.

Make sure you get something legally binding before you pay the money in. Changing title while on a mortgage is a bit more complex. I'd speak to a solicitor, but it might be a case of getting a deed of trust written up, pay out the mortgage, then register the change of title into joint tenants or tenants in common. Otherwise I think the bank has to consent and you might have to get a joint mortgage then change the ownership before paying it out.

How much is the house worth and how much are you paying off .If the house is worth £300000 and your paying £200000 you would be losing out I would try to make sure the money is paid to the bank or building society and not into his account -to be on the safe side .Also be aware that you can be scammed by fake emails pretending to from your solicitor giving you a false bank account number to pay your money into .Just be careful
