I'm (hopefully) divorcing ex and asked him if he knew where the marriage certificate is as he lives in the marital home. He said in a bag in the loft so today I went and hunted in the loft but to no avail. He could've looked but was being awkward. My mum reckons he doesn't want the divorce but it's totally over. I knew it a long while back.
Anyway, we got married in the US ...Florida to be exact...so will a copy do? I can ring the solicitor on Monday but was just wondering if anyone knew?

You'd need the original or an authorised copy (not a photocopy) for a UK divorce, but as you got married in another country there are almost certainly other issues - strongly suggest you get the solicitor's opinion on that.

Rule No 1, never keep vital documents like marriage certificates, passports or house deeds in a bag in the loft!

I know Annie I didn't put it there he did. The marriage was legal so that should be ok.
He came to take the boys out today and said that he thought it was in a certain bag but has since looked and it isn't there? I looked everywhere, even in bags I knew it wouldn't be in.
I'll ring the solicitor tomorrow and see what she says.

Hi,

Used to work as a Matrimonial legal secretary so thought I would just say that the solicitor will be able to get hold of a certified copy of the marriage certificate. It might take a bit longer to obtain due to it being in America but as long as you have the details of the district and place where you were married shouldn't be too difficult to get hold of. Good luck with everything.
