Deceased person enquiry

Hi, I am hoping someone on Mumsnet may be able to provide some insight into this query.

My mother's uncle died on Wednesday, 15 January. He was an elderly eccentric, with some mental health issues and dementia. He left his country of birth some 50 years ago and was over the last decade (perhaps longer) had refused contact with his family members.

In 2018, when my mother visited the UK, she tried to visit her uncle at his home in London but he did not allow her to see him. A neighbour of the uncle (who she had met on her last visit) messaged her this week to tell her that her uncle had died and had in December been taken to a mental health or old age facility. No further details were released to the neighbour as he is not next-of-kin. My sister, who lives in the UK, has been trying to get further information as to where his body may be lying / whether he has been buried, but has been unsuccessful thus far.

Is there any way to obtain this information? Is there any organisation my sister could call to enquire further? The only details my mother has of her late uncle are is his name and his address in London, so rather scant.

Thank you for any input.

You can find a record of someone's death at register offices in the UK, so that might be somewhere to start? If you have an address, you'll be able to find the nearest register office and contact them.

Try the Coroner for the district. The local authority at the Council Offices/Town Hall should be able to put you in touch with the Coroner's Office.

Who told the neighbour about the death? I would start there. Local social services may be able to help, too.
