Can't afford divorce

How do people honestly afford divorce? I have a lovely life material wise and so do my children - surely that would disappear overnight? I earn probably half what my DH earns. House would have to go etc.

Anyone else avoid divorce because of this?

I think lots of people stay in a relatively unhappy marriage for convenience I.e. keeping a good standard of living for the whole family. It’s not a case of staying for money, it’s the fear of putting your kids into poverty or a poor lifestyle.

Nope. I got divorced and didn't have a penny to my name. No job. I went on benefits. My ex has a good job, he pays maintenance which I saved up. I stood on my own two feet, got back into work and am about to buy a house 6 years after my divorce.

Money is not a substitute for happiness. It would never have occured to me to stay in my unhappy marriage for financial reasons.

Plenty of children grow up happy despite being poor and I'm always intrigued by the mindset that comfortable children with miserable parents are better off than happy children with poor single parents.

Spoiler alert: they're not

If you both are agreeing to the split and only have basic financial settlement to sort it can be done online with the government website. It all depends on what issues need to be sorted. Me and my ex have done it this way as we are just walking away sorting finances simply and own custody agreements. These can also be added to the court costs online if needed.
