ENGAGEMENT RINGS

Taloola40 · 30/12/2019 23:24

Hey guys,

I was super lucky to get proposed to on Christmas Day.

Just wondering how those of you engaged got your rings, did you pick them yourself, how long did it take you to pick, did your other half pick themselves, were you happy with it......?

Just curious :)

Got engaged yesterday. We’re going to pick out the ring together tomorrow. He knew (rightly) that I’d want to choose

L238 · 30/12/2019 23:25

And congrats to you!

ChristmasSweet · 30/12/2019 23:31

I chose it in the end but I did show him a few I liked and we went shopping for it together. He had no hope of knowing what I would like, I didn't even know other than not a solitaire. Grin

CherryPavlova · 30/12/2019 23:34

Congratulations.
My husband picked mine without consulting anyone. It was his gift to me and very beautiful. Sadly I lost it within three days.

My daughter had hers designed by her fiancé. She hadn’t seen it but he checked with us that she’d like it. It’s beautiful - as most engagement rings are.

KellyHall · 30/12/2019 23:37

I already had a beautiful ring, when I thought an engagement was on the cards I gave it to my now dh to propose with. He'd have never afforded anything that he'd really want to give me before we were ancient.

Taloola40 · 30/12/2019 23:39

Congratulations L238.

I love the ring my other half picked. But I just don't know if it's thee one! That sounds terrible I know. I love the fact he went and picked it. I just think I need to have a shop around to make sure. I sound awful saying this I really do, just if I'm wearing this forever more surely it has to be the right one!! Shoot me down if I'm being an ungrateful b£#&h!

We went to Hatton Gardens and chose one together. Lots of great quality jewellers to choose from. Congratulations

Elieza · 30/12/2019 23:54

Try on other ones too as sometimes what you think you like is uncomfortable. As you say, you’ll be wearing it for a long time and you want to get it right.

L238 · 31/12/2019 00:17

@Taloola40 I don’t think you’re being ungrateful at all! There’s no harm in having a look and trying others on. I think it’s also normal to not know if it’s “the one”.
I can see how it would also be really special to have one that your DP chose but if it doesn’t feel right then I’m sure he would understand?

TheSandgroper · 31/12/2019 08:13

I saw my ring a month before I saw then bf again. When I did see him, I just blurted out “I’ve seen a ring.” He said “Well, I’d better ask you, then.” Thankfully, the shop still had the ring.

Sparklyring · 31/12/2019 10:18

My DH chose mine and it was perfect. I've genuinely never known anyone who wasnt proposed to without a ring and then went to choose it.

hellsbellsmelons · 31/12/2019 10:24

First engagement, he chose the ring.
As I didn't want to be engaged or marry him I told him I didn't like it (because I didn't) and we went and got one of my choice (yes I was young and was doing it to keep everyone else happy)
Second engagement, proposed but no ring. We went and chose the ring together right after the proposal.

PurpleDaisies · 31/12/2019 10:27

I’m confused, do you not like the ring he bought?

Serenity45 · 31/12/2019 10:30

Congratulations! My DH got me a 'fake' ring to propose with (think it was a tenner from M&S or something). He knows I'm really particular about jewellery though so wouldn't have picked for me. We live near Birmingham so went to the jewellery quarter. Ended up having one designed and made after picking the diamond as it turns out I didn't like any of the ones we saw. I'm really clumsy and didn't want a ring that would catch on stuff and a lot of the solitaires really stick out! Jeweller has set it really flat and made it to match the wedding rings we had already bought.

I still love it six years later - there is nothing wrong in asking to change it / go have a look and try on rings as you will (hopefully) be wearing it forever. I'm sure your DP would rather you have 'the one' when he's probably spending a bit on it?

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 31/12/2019 10:37

My other half proposed without a ring. We really enjoyed shopping for it together.

Congratulations!

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 31/12/2019 10:39

What’s your ring like OP, and what do you think you’d prefer? Is it going to be impractical?

HRHPrincessMegan · 31/12/2019 10:43

Congratulations! My DH proposed without a ring and “we chose” together - basically I picked and he paid. Our aesthetics are quite different but he thought the ring as lovely as I did/still do. Make sure you know your budget before setting out, sounds unromantic but will save you both from potential awkwardness.

HRHPrincessMegan · 31/12/2019 10:48

Totally missed OP that you already have a ring. My sister had a similar situation. After an awkward conversation they change the ring. She loves the one she has now. The issue you might face is the retail price builds in so much margin you won’t get anywhere near the original price if you try to return it. You might therefore have to get the replacement from the same jeweller.

Hollylolly28 · 31/12/2019 10:56

Congratulations I also got engaged on Christmas day he picked the ring I probably wouldn't of picked it but I really love it on

shoebedobedobedobedoo · 31/12/2019 11:08

I know 3 people who don’t like the rings their DH chose for them.

  1. My mum. Never wore it after her wedding day. It’s still sitting in a drawer somewhere.
  2. A cousin was given a family heirloom which she didn’t like and asked for it to be altered. By her own admission the alterations ruined it.
  3. A friend who was given her DH’s grandmothers ring and she really didn’t like it, so her DH bought another one.

DH and I looked together, whittled it down to 2 and he chose.

mogtheexcellent · 31/12/2019 11:16

I hate my ring. Never wear it. He chose it. Big mistake.

NaturalBornWoman · 31/12/2019 12:15

My husband chose mine. It's very nice, he did his research, chose a beautiful diamond and had it set into a platinum setting which is perfect and elegant. I'd probably have chosen a marquise or cushion cut with a pear each side if I'm completely honest.
