Why do men stare?

I'm in my early 20s I've only had one relationship but my question is why do men stare? This man kept looking at me then looking away when I looked over when I was out yesterday.

It makes me self conscious and I don't know what to do when it happens!

Hurdgurdy no, generally speaking, women dont stare at men ‘in the same way’. I’m sure it happens from time to time, humans being unpredictable....but generally women don’t sit or stand alone , staring at a man in a way that makes him feel uncomfortable and even scared. This is because of a mismatch of power between men and women and the propensity of some men to exploit it.

Perhaps you aren’t a feminist; if so you won’t see it my way.

Hmm

Have kids and put on weight then you become invisible.

booboo24 · 14/12/2019 08:47

Just pretend you haven't noticed or stare back but very straight faced or he'll think you're interested! Some men just do this, I find they're worse in groups at being really obvious. When I was younger I used to want the ground to swallow me up, now I'm early forties I either shake my head to myself as I walk past or just glare back!

MrsEricBana · 14/12/2019 08:51

Because he likes the look of you or a million other reasons. Just look away.

Sadiesnakes · 14/12/2019 08:56

Oh for the love of god, the naivety here is unreal🙄

It's because some men, (alot) objectify women and girls and have zero self control to even try hide it.

Simple as.

Sadiesnakes · 14/12/2019 08:58

And no, most, the majority of women don't stare at men, ever. Anyone trying to convince otherwise is probably male or disillusioned.

JacquesHammer · 14/12/2019 08:59

They think it’s foreplay.

Bumfuzzled · 14/12/2019 09:01

Exactly what @Sadiesnakes said.

daisychain01 · 14/12/2019 09:03

It's all the fault of womenz for having their boobs hanging out. Poor menz, what they have to deal with.

Mostlyhappy4 · 14/12/2019 09:07

Absolutely @tictoc. I remember that staring from middle aged men and groups of men 'havinf a laugh' by staring, wolf whistling and calling out when I was young.. I hated it and used to go red. Then as I got into my twenties I started staring back, or making it obvious that I found them rude. Men don't like that and I got the "she's weird" type response...Pah bloody idiots.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 14/12/2019 09:07

There could be a variety of reasons. This used to happen to me quite often when I was teens-twenties. Funnily enough now that I am in my forties and look like the ill, harassed, exhausted mother of two that I am, it doesn't happen so often. And when I am out with DH it doesn't happen at all. Go figure that one out Wink

Oh and the wipe your nose on the sleeve thing doesn't always work. To be fair the particular lad was quite drunk Grin

God it’s a relief to become invisible. I was attractive and got stared leered and gawped at for years. Yes it’s and a power thing. As for what to do difficult I just ignored it.

My 11 year old was in tears recently because a man kept staring at her “between her legs” in the Paris metro. And so it begins...

PlasticPatty · 14/12/2019 09:12

Read about 'pick-up artists'.

And it's not true that if you put on weight, have children, or even grow old, you become invisible.

MsTSwift · 14/12/2019 09:13

Missed out key word “pervy”. And if you think “women do it too” you are living on a different planet or have never been an attractive young girl

JacquesHammer · 14/12/2019 09:17

MsTSwift my DD is stared at regularly. A delightful male poster on MN asked me if I’d thought about advising her to “cover up”.

So basically “I can’t help myself perving on 13 year olds. Can you get them to sort it for me”

PumpkinP · 14/12/2019 17:12

Really? As I use to be very slim and pretty and got attention wherever i went and was never able to go out without getting men talking to me, then bam I had kids and ballooned to a size 20 and now I’m certainly invisible to men! I don’t get looked at at all (not that I’m complaining) and I’m certainly never approached.

Mermaidsinthesand · 14/12/2019 17:24

Ask him why he looking or just ignore the behaviour. How a bunch of internet strangers can tell you what he was looking at beyond me
