Can limerence cause physical illness?

NCed for this, not a poo troll... Been here a few years.

I am in the full blown stages of limerence. It's driving me mad but I do recognise what it is and know I need to get past it. However I've had diarrhoea 6 nights out of the past 8 which isn't like me at all, there's no pattern in terms of a specific food causing it, I'm fine the rest of the time. I've had physical symptoms of limerence such as increased heart rate, butterflies, a weird muscle tensing/twitching/shivering whenever I talk to him. Could limerence be causing diarrhoea as well?!

Had to google limerence!

I can’t answer for sure, obviously, but when DH asked me to marry him (it was all very sudden, friends with a loving platonic relationship to a full-blown romantic relationship in the space of a week!) I had an awful tummy, and also couldn’t eat properly and survived mostly on smoothies. So I guess from my own experience that emotional agitation could lead to diarrhoea…

HTH!

Tolleshunt · 19/11/2019 21:44

Emotions and the resulting hormonal/neurotransmitter cascade can affect the gut quite profoundly, so it’s very possible. Or, you could have a bug...

PeterRouseTheFleshofMankind · 19/11/2019 21:49

Honestly, I have only ever heard of limerence on MN, but it seems to be the buzzword on here at the moment!

I really doubt its related to be honest, limerence is basically a fancy word for a strong crush.

Emotions and mental state can cause physical symptoms but if you have only had this for a week (presumably if you are in 'the full blown stages' you have been going through this for a lot longer than a week) then it's probably just a bug or something.

Limerent · 19/11/2019 21:50

But @Tolleshunt don't bugs normally make you run to the loo several times a day? Not just once? I got Friday and Sunday off then it started again last night. And surely DH would've caught it by now?

Yes.
It gave me an eating disorder.

The shits? No, I didn't get that.

Haworthia · 19/11/2019 21:54

Anxiety does, and the symptoms you describe are similar to anxiety, so it sounds plausible.

Don’t call it limerence though. Only Mumsnetters use that word. It’s an unhealthy crush/obsession.

dutchmaster · 19/11/2019 21:55

its probably the adrenaline

Tolleshunt · 19/11/2019 21:56

Possibly, you could have a mild bug that just causes a loose bm, but you still go just once at the same time per day. I’ve hadn’t that before. But I do think it could be the limerance, yes. I’ve had limerance and it was fucking awful. Hope I never get is again.

Limerent · 19/11/2019 22:05

@Haworthia potato, potato Grin I know it's unhealthy, I'm determined to get it/him out of my system as soon as I can so I can refocus on my marriage.

Had a huge crush in my 20s on someone I occasionally saw at work, ran to the loo every time he came in (swore my insides could tell when he was just thinking about it). Very unsexy!
As pp said I think it's adrenaline.

FavouriteSoul · 19/11/2019 22:34

Limerance romanticises an obsessive crush, there's nothing romantic about having diarrhoea though.

SouthernComforts · 19/11/2019 23:06

Tell him about your symptoms OP, it should help shift the limerance.

ChippyPickledEggs · 19/11/2019 23:22

I'm thinking of possible pop songs: Yooooou give me the shits

Same here. It's a nonsense that just makes having a crush and not taking control of your own feelings more than it really is.

OP, yes, emotional upset can have physical effects which is why people have nervous poops and the like.

But limerance? Stop 'feeding'the belief that this is a thing.

SameOldShitDifferentDay · 20/11/2019 10:40

Poos. I wouldnt ever say poops 🙄

Limerent · 21/11/2019 20:25

An update for anyone interested... I blocked him on everything yesterday morning and I won't be seeing him in person anymore - I've been absolutely fine ever since, so I genuinely think the anxiety-like effects I was having were causing the stomach upset, as ridiculous as that may seem.

Yup, it happened to me a while back....very strong crush....drove me mad and I had diarrhoea and sweats etc....lost weight which was lovely! I had to get to grips with it. Fine now. Horrible feeling though!
