It means he's trying to let you down gently and convince himself he's a good guy because you're amicable but he's moved on. (New love interest probably waiting in the wings.) P.s I'm not a guy but this man is so far from being original......

Does it matter?

What Shouldbedoing said, or he’s one of those who think they should stay friends with everyone, even when they’ve fucked you over.

Do what you want. Coffee with this guy doesn’t sound like an ambition of yours, so don’t do it.

Not a guy but I've seen this behaviour over and over again. It usually happens when a relationship is coming/has come to an end. I don't know why they do it, I presume they don't want the heartache that might come from an immediate split or they don't want to come across as a twat or maybe because they feel guilty/testing the water with an other woman 🤷‍♀️. There's nearly always an other women.

I read a post recently where a woman said that she wasn't going to move out and get a divorce until her ex understood why she didn't want to be with him. Basically she was convinced that it's cruel to do it the conventional way and announce the break up then move out immediately but I think that she was mean to string him along as you can't mend your broken heart until you have proper space.

I suspect your ex doesn't want people to think he's a twat so is acting like a friend hoping that you'll move him from lover to friend category.
