Citalopram

Hello Everybody,

I just wondered if anyone has any experience of being the partner of someone who has been prescribed/uses Citalopram.

My partner has been using the drug for two years now, and whilst it's helped immeasurably with certain MH issues - the side effects are having an impact on our relationship.

Tired all the time - meaning I do 90% of the housework despite working 55/60 hours per week (she works 16 hours).

Hoarding - there are piles and I mean piles and piles of stuff in the spare room, just never gets sorted.

Zero Sex Drive

Are there alternatives to Citalopram?
Can the side effects be reduced?

I know this may sound selfish.

Hello DH 😁

Not really - I don't work 16hrs a week and DH doesn't do that much housework! I can totally relate though.

It sounds like the citalopram is keeping an even keel but your DP might need other therapy (CBT is popular) to challenge the negative thoughts. Has she tried that or is it just medication?

I've previously taken citalopram and can't say I suffered any side effects other than (sorry for tmi) being slightly desensitised down below (didn't affect my sex drive, just made it more difficult to reach orgasm).

It's not selfish if the side effects are detrimental to your life and relationship. There are many types of antidepressants, so it may be that there is one better suited to her, with less obvious side effects. Maybe encourage her to have a chat with her GP, and it may help for you to go along so that you can tell them how it's affecting you too.
