Bit of background - DS goes to nursery 3 days a week and MIL doesn't really approve as her 'children never went to nursery'.

Last week nursery told me that DS (12 months) could feed himself (as in hold the spoon, scoop food out of the bowl and put it in his mouth) so today I thought I would share this achievement with MIL.

Me: Oh, nursery said that DS can feed himself now (said smugly)

MIL: What - feed himself (said in a tone of shock which I thought was because she was surprised he could do it at his age)

Me: Yes (smug again)

MIL: Can the staff not be bothered to feed him then?

WTF....talk about getting the wrong end of the stick - and I was too shocked to say much in reply - I muttered something weakly about how he needs to attempt it to learn how to do it but it fell on deaf ears I feel.

No doubt she is now telling all her cronies about the 'terrible' nursery her grandson goes to!

Crikey, i have no advice whatsoever on your evil MIL but my DS is 16mths and is nowhere near feeding himself so well impressed that yours can at 12mths.

More MIL comments to share:
On my proud achievement that my DD was eating Weetabix when I couldn't get her to eat anything else "you shouldn't give her weetabix as it will bloat her out. That's why she won't eat anything else"
And the classic on giving DD peanuts at 12 months "She's got teeth, she can chew them"

Gotta love 'em (or not)

LOL Ceebee74.
It reminds me - when my dd learnt to hold her own bottle my mum's response was 'Oh, he can be a self-feeding cot baby' - apparently there was a scandal back in the 70s about babies who were neglected in their cots with bottles all day and consequently learnt to feed themselves at an alarmingly early age in order to survive

I know they've been there and done that, but they have to remember it was thirty years or so ago since they were mums.
My mil makes food up for us, as she obviously thinks I'm not feeding dd right, or early enough. Whatever....

Thanks for helping me appreciate my fairly innocuous MIL!

Ah, MILs!
Can't live with 'em -
Can't kill 'em!

makes me SO thankful MIL lives abroad, only have to put up with queries via email. Such as "have you started him on the potty yet?" - when ds was 9 months old, WTF??

hurtwife · 31/07/2007 07:25

Oh dear though - one day this will be us - just as we said we would not say the same things as our parents did - (because i said so....), we will too be coming out with some gems later.

I remember being on holiday and our DD (about 4 at the time) likes to have mayonnaise with her dinner instead of ketchup... My mum turned around very seriously and said to me: "I really think you need to wean her off mayonnaise!" like it was some sort of life altering addiction!!!!

I get on really well with my MIL's, its my Mum who makes all the comments!!!
