Nottinghamshire police - blunt knives

supersop60 · 13/06/2019 20:10

I am amazed that no-one has posted on here yet about this latest initiative by Nottinghamshire police. They are sending victims of abuse back to their homes, but with blunt knives to replace the sharp ones in their house.
WTAF?

I would imagine it's more of a limiting measure.

Lives may be saved.

Victims of abuse rarely leave their abusive partner after the first occasion , on average it takes seven attempts before the victim actually breaks away. In the interim the best police can do is probably to attempt the risk as much as possible. I think it’s a good idea.

Lefty1 · 13/06/2019 20:18

*attempt to mitigate the risk that should have said

supersop60 · 13/06/2019 20:28

I can see their attempt to reduce the risk. However, do they replace ALL the knives (we have several)? and what about when the abusive partner looks in the drawer - is there not going to be some sort of reaction? possibly a bad one?

What about scissors? Hedge cutters? Knitting needles? Are they removing them as well?

checkoutno3please · 13/06/2019 20:45

Not quite sure what you want the police to do. Police aren't forcing women to go back to their abusers.

As another poster said it takes quite a few attempts before someone would leave an abuser. At least police are recognising the risk.

picklemepopcorn · 13/06/2019 20:55

I would suggest that the most frequent weapon used is the knife that is grabbed during an argument, most frequently in the kitchen. Whether it's a DV victim grabbing it to defend themselves, or the aggressor.
Couples know they have a problem, and aren't going to be phased by the knives being swapped out once the police have been involved.

NoBaggyPants · 13/06/2019 21:06

No one is sending victims back to their abuser, but some do choose to return, and they'll still supported if that is their choice. A blunt knife may be offered (it's up to the victim if they want it or not), along with many other measures to keep them safe.

Suggesting that a police force is "sending victims of abuse back to their homes" is downright irresponsible, such a statement could discourage a victim from asking for help.

The problem with knives is that it's easy for an unlucky blow to kill, often with no intention from the person holding the knife. These knives give a little space and time when violence sparks up.

I think there is a thread on this in Feminist Chat OP.

Lefty1 · 13/06/2019 23:38

@supersop60 i think there are some stats to suggest that (in the U.K. at least ) the typical weapon in fatal domestic abuse case is a knife , the victim knows if it will be useful mitigation or not.
Police will always encourage a victim of abuse to get out of the abusive scenario and will want the victim to pursue charges, reality is when a victim is caught in the cycle of abuse , leaving just doesn’t happen over night. What else would you suggest the police do ?
Being critical of our police force, who often put their lives on the line in those type of circumstances, is a bit shit OP. Sorry.

supersop60 · 14/06/2019 07:35

I'm only going on the reports I heard on the radio, where they actually used the phrase "sending people at risk of DV or who have already been attacked back to their home with a blunted knife"
I think the police do a fantastic job especially considering their ever reducing resources. I am just a bit Hmm at this particular scheme. I'll check out the other thread.
