Need advice: has anyone represented themselves in court in divorce proceedings?

Just that basically. I cannot afford solicitors's fees. Tried mediation, but it did not work with the abusive monster of an ex. I keep thinking, what do I have to lose if I go to court on my own without a solicitor? I would love to hear your experiences please.

Hi op. I had a solicitor who helped me to file for divorce. I cannot afford it anymore so I am filing the remaining paperwork myself. I've contacted the divorce court at Bury St. Edmunds and found them most helpful. The staff their can talk you through thepaperwork.
My ex and I don't have any assets to divide up, but we have a son.

Thank you Floralhousecoat for your reply. That is actually a very good idea. I would not have thought of it. I will contact the court to ask for advice.

You're welcome, Earthly. There are books on how to navigate the process, such as divorce for dummies. I haven't read any, however you may wish to see what's out there.

The solicitor I had told me that divorce is just a paper exercise. The only time you would really need to go to court would be if assets need to be divided up or have dc and you cannot mutually come to an agreement wrt division of assets or custody of dc.

Also, my understanding is that divorce has become easier and there's a huge amount of freee information out there to guide you through the process.
Good luck x
